XPeng Launches Automated IRON Humanoid Production Line Where Robots Make Robots

Chinese electric vehicle maker XPeng has commissioned dedicated production lines for its IRON humanoid robot, with more than 80% of core manufacturing processes automated as the company prepares to begin mass production by the end of 2026.


The milestone brings a rather futuristic manufacturing concept closer to reality: robots helping build other robots.

XPeng announced that its first advanced general-purpose IRON humanoid robot had completed production on the newly commissioned line before autonomously walking off it.

According to XPeng's announcement, the facility combines manufacturing systems developed for its electric vehicle business with precision processes designed specifically for humanoid robots. The company claims it is the world's first automated production line built for advanced general-purpose humanoid robots.


Business Today reported that XPeng Chairman and CEO He Xiaopeng described the system as using robots to manufacture other robots autonomously. The report also highlighted footage showing IRON completing assembly before walking off the production line and approaching He without being manually moved from the facility.


More than 80% of the line's core processes are automated, according to XPeng, with the facility designed to support higher production volumes and rapid capacity expansion.


“The robot production lines were created from scratch with no precedent to follow,” said He Xiaopeng.


What Can XPeng's IRON Humanoid Robot Do?


IRON comes with 76 degrees of freedom across its body, including 21 degrees of freedom in each hand, giving it the mobility and dexterity required for human-like movements.


It is powered by three of XPeng's in-house Turing AI chips, which the company says deliver up to 2,250 TOPS of effective computing performance. This allows XPeng's Physical AI foundation model to run directly on the robot instead of relying on remote processing.


XPeng says the onboard system allows IRON to perform complex tasks autonomously while reducing inference latency and improving data security.


CnEVPost noted that commissioning the line marks the transition from R&D prototypes to production-line manufacturing, but importantly, does not mean IRON has entered full mass production yet. XPeng says that milestone is planned for the end of 2026.


A separate BigGo Finance report similarly said the company is targeting volume output before the end of 2026, while highlighting the 80% automation level and IRON's 2,250 TOPS of onboard computing power.


When Will XPeng IRON Enter Mass Production?


XPeng plans to begin mass production of IRON by the end of 2026, with the first robots expected to be deployed at the company's own stores and campuses.


An official market launch and deliveries across China and overseas markets are scheduled for 2027. However, XPeng has not disclosed the production line's current capacity or an official price for IRON.

 



Live Science reported separately that XPeng representatives expect humanoid robots to eventually move beyond commercial environments and assist with household tasks such as cleaning and folding laundry. The publication described IRON as entering mass production, although XPeng's own September 8 announcement more specifically states that mass production is scheduled to begin by the end of 2026.


The production milestone also comes shortly after XPeng's robotics business secured more than $900 million from investors at a post-money valuation exceeding $6.3 billion.


XPeng described the investment as the largest single-round private capital raise in China's embodied AI industry to date. The company sees robotics as one of its three major growth areas alongside automobiles and globalization, bringing the increasingly crowded humanoid robotics race from prototype demonstrations closer to industrial-scale manufacturing.
