U.S. Cuts Tariffs On India From 50% To 18% In Trade Deal

Trade deals rarely move markets unless they signal something bigger. When tariffs, energy choices, and geopolitics collide, the outcome often reshapes more than just trade flows.

That’s the backdrop to the latest U.S.–India agreement, which marks a shift in how both countries are aligning their economic and strategic priorities.

TL;DR

  • U.S. cuts tariffs on Indian goods from 50% to 18%.
  • India agrees to reduce Russian oil imports and buy more from the U.S.
  • Markets rally as U.S.–India trade ties reset.

U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Washington will cut tariffs on Indian goods to 18%, down from 50%. The earlier rate included an added 25% penalty imposed last year to pressure India over its continued purchases of Russian oil. That penalty has now been rolled back as part of the deal.

In return, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed that India will gradually reduce and eventually stop buying Russian oil. India will also increase purchases of U.S. energy and other goods, with Trump saying the total could exceed $500 billion, and move to lower trade and non-tariff barriers for American products.

“Wonderful to speak with my dear friend President Trump today. Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18%,” Modi said in a post on X. “Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement.”

Markets reacted quickly to the news. U.S.-listed shares of major Indian companies rallied, with Infosys rising 4.3%, Wipro gaining 6.8%, and HDFC Bank up 4.4%. The iShares MSCI India ETF also climbed 3%, reflecting relief after months of tariff-driven pressure on Indian assets.

For India, the tariff cut eases pressure on exporters, helps stabilize markets, and brings its trade terms closer to those of other Asian economies. The timing is notable, coming just days after India finalized a major trade deal with the European Union.

For the U.S., the agreement supports its push to curb Russian oil revenues while expanding American energy exports and strengthening its trade footprint with a key strategic partner.

While many details remain unclear including timelines, legal approvals, and specific product commitments, the direction is evident. U.S.–India trade ties are entering a new phase, shaped as much by energy and geopolitics as by economics.
