Glass Imaging develops AI-powered camera technology designed to improve image quality at the moment a photo is taken. Instead of relying on AI to enhance an image afterward, its neural networks learn the characteristics of individual camera systems and use that knowledge to produce better results during capture.

The approach targets one of the most persistent constraints in smartphone photography: limited physical space for camera hardware. Glass Imaging aims to deliver image quality closer to a DSLR from a smartphone, while its zoom-imaging technology has already appeared in phones from Honor.

Glass Imaging was founded in 2019 by Ziv Attar and Tom Bishop, two former Apple engineers who worked on the team behind Apple’s Portrait Mode. The Los Altos, California-based company had raised around $30 million before the reported acquisition, including funding from GV and Insight Partners.

The reported purchase price of more than $300 million is also a notable jump from Glass Imaging’s roughly $100 million valuation in a funding round last year.

That makes the deal more than a small talent acquisition. It gives OpenAI access to a team with deep smartphone imaging experience and technology built around computer vision, neural networks, and camera hardware.

In 2025, the company acquired io Products, the device startup linked to former Apple design chief Jony Ive, for $6.5 billion. OpenAI and Ive have since been working on new hardware, while reports have also connected the company with possible smartphones, earbuds, and AI companion devices.

Glass Imaging adds a more specific capability to that push: AI-native imaging designed for physical devices rather than software-only experiences.

Whether that technology ends up inside a smartphone, a new AI device, or something else remains unanswered. For now, OpenAI’s reported $300 million-plus bet suggests the camera may be becoming just as important to its hardware ambitions as the screen, microphone, or chatbot.
