Overall Rating

Netflix has disclosed that it spent approximately $587 million in cash on a March 2026 acquisition, providing the first confirmed price for its purchase of InterPositive, the AI filmmaking technology company founded by actor, writer and director Ben Affleck.

The acquisition note in Netflix’s regulatory filing does not explicitly name InterPositive. However, Netflix announced the InterPositive deal on March 5, while its first-quarter shareholder update confirmed that the company acquired InterPositive during the quarter, connecting the $587 million payment to the startup.

TL;DR

  • Netflix paid approximately $587 million in cash for the March 2026 acquisition.
  • InterPositive develops filmmaker-focused AI tools for production and post-production challenges.
  • The startup’s full team joined Netflix, while Ben Affleck became a Senior Advisor.
  • Netflix says generative AI workflows have already been used across roughly 300 of its titles.

What Is InterPositive Bringing To Netflix?

Founded in 2022, InterPositive develops AI models designed around professional filmmaking workflows. Rather than focusing on generating performances from text prompts, its systems are intended to work with footage and production data created by filmmakers.

Affleck said the company built a proprietary dataset on a controlled soundstage to teach its models the language and visual logic used by cinematographers, directors and editors.

Its first model was trained to understand visual logic and editorial consistency while addressing real-world production challenges such as missing shots, background replacements and incorrect lighting.

The company says its smaller, purpose-built datasets and models focus on filmmaking techniques rather than actors’ performances. That distinction is central to how Affleck has positioned the technology amid wider concerns about AI’s effect on creative jobs and production work.

Affleck said he created the company to “protect the power of human creativity and the people behind it.”

Netflix said InterPositive’s entire team joined the streaming company through the acquisition, with Affleck taking on the role of Senior Advisor. Elizabeth Stone, Netflix Chief Product and Technology Officer, said the companies share the belief that “innovation should empower storytellers, not replace them.”

Netflix’s AI Push Is Already Scaling

The acquisition arrives as Netflix expands AI use throughout its content pipeline, covering concept development, pre-visualization, production, post-production and delivery.

In its second-quarter update, Netflix said generative AI workflows had been used across roughly 300 titles in 2026, with the largest concentration of work taking place in post-production. These included Glory from India, Brasil 70: A Saga do Tri from Brazil and The American Experiment from the United States.

The productions used AI tools for complex sequences involving enhanced crowds, historical battles and worldbuilding establishing shots. Netflix said some of these shots may otherwise have been excluded because of budget or production limitations.

Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos also said The American Experiment included 17 minutes of AI-enhanced footage that was produced twice as fast and at half the cost of previous options.

The $587 million price shows Netflix is treating filmmaker-focused AI as more than an experiment. However, its long-term impact will depend on whether the technology genuinely expands creative options, how transparently it is deployed and whether efficiency gains benefit the artists and production specialists whose work it changes.

For now, Netflix has acquired both a specialist team and a production-focused AI platform. The next test is whether InterPositive can deliver faster and lower-cost workflows without weakening the human judgment its founder says the technology was built to protect.
