Google: New Photo-To-Video Tool, Pixel 10 And AI Overviews Halves Link Clicks
Updated on Thu, Jul 24, 2025
Interestingly, that’s the only concrete bit of information Google put out about Pixel 10—save for an “exclusive offer” that’s available to Google Store subscribers who sign up for updates by 19 August. Even those details will be shared on the day that the phones are available for pre-order.
Even without any details or specifications provided, it’s safe to guess that the Pixel 10 will be loaded with several artificial intelligence (AI) features and services.
It’s a safe bet, considering Google is a leading name in the AI industry, spanning chatbots such as Gemini, infrastructure such as Ironwood TPU, wearable devices such as Android XR smart glasses, and a host of AI-powered applications. Google’s AI tech is enhancing sectors such as healthcare, accessibility, UX, research, media and entertainment, and more.
Essentially, Google is all about AI—and a lot of its capabilities are powered by the company’s dedicated AI division, Google DeepMind.
It’s not just futuristic technology that Google is powering; it’s items from the past, too.
Google DeepMind revealed a new AI model called Aeneas that can help historians interpret, attribute, and restore fragmentary ancient Latin texts. Furthermore, the model can find texts that share similarities in wording, syntax, standardized formulas, or provenance across thousands of Latin inscriptions.
It can also process multimodal input (text and images), restore gaps in text, and can be adapted to other ancient languages, scripts and media, from papyri to coinage. Also, its code and dataset are open source.
This model was announced on July 23, building on the previously released Ithaca, which was announced on March 9, 2022, and is used to decode ancient Greek inscriptions. The move comes courtesy of Google’s Predict the Past initiative, which also houses an interactive version that is freely available to researchers, students and educators.
The aim of the initiative is to “transform how historians connect the past.”
Google Photos’ New Photo-To-Video Capability
On July 23, Google announced the introduction of several new creative tools in Google Photos.
This includes a photo-to-video capability that allows users to create six-second videos from the photos saved in their gallery. Users will be offered two prompts to animate their photo, after selecting one from their gallery—“Subtle movements” or “I’m feeling lucky.”
The new feature will also be available in YouTube Shorts—where users can select their preferred video length. Google is also bringing new effects—such as swimming underwater, twinning with a lookalike sibling, and more—as well as creation tools in AI playground.
While this feature already exists in Gemini and YouTube—powered by Veo 3—the new Google Photos feature will be powered by Veo 2. The new feature will be freely available to Android and iOS users in the U.S., Canada, Australia, and New Zealand over this week.
Google also introduced a new “Remix” feature that allows users to pick and transform the style of images in their gallery. This will begin rolling out in the U.S. in the next few weeks.
Additionally, Google introduced a new Create tab in the Photos app that shows each feature—including Photo to video, Remix, collages, highlight videos, and more—all in one place, making it easy for users to access tools and discover new ones.
Google’s AI Overviews Cutting Link Clicks By Nearly 50%
Amid all the successes and failures that have transpired due to Google’s AI Overviews—on Google Search—one that caught the eye has been Pew Research Center’s new findings.
In a study that analyzed data from 900 U.S. adults who agreed to share their online browsing activity, it was found that 6 in 10 (58%) respondents conducted at least one Google search in March 2025 that produced an AI-generated summary.
The respondents who were provided with summaries were less likely to click on result links when compared to those who didn’t receive a summary.
Coming to the numbers, the study consisted of 68,879 unique searches, out of which 18% produced AI Overviews. In searches without AI Overviews, users clicked on result links 15% of the time. Where there were AI Overviews, only 8% of users clicked on result links—a deduction of almost 50%.
While this is a win for Google AI Overviews, it raises concerns about the spread of misinformation if the reviews aren't accurate. It also creates problems for websites that rely on Google Search for traffic, throwing out questions about splurging large amounts to rank higher on search engine results pages (SERPs).
It’s not just its own AI products and capabilities that Google is enhancing.
Recently, Google Cloud and OpenAI partnered to provide the latter with cloud computing resources to train and deliver its AI models to users—and Google CEO Sundar Pichai is “very excited” by the deal.
“With respect to OpenAI, look, we are very excited to be partnering with them on Google Cloud,” said Pichai. “Google Cloud is an open platform, and we have a strong history of supporting great companies, startups, AI labs, etc. So super excited about our partnership there on the cloud side, and we look forward to investing more in that relationship and growing that.”
This comes despite OpenAI’s products and services—particularly ChatGPT—posing a major threat to Google Search.
However, with Google’s AI Overviews eating up link clicks, Google Search’s biggest threat could be its own powerful and capable AI technology.
Do you think Google can overtake OpenAI to become the leader of the AI sector?
