Overall Rating
Google is reshaping how people interact with maps by introducing a new Gemini-powered Ask Maps feature alongside a major upgrade to navigation called Immersive Navigation.

The update brings conversational search, smarter trip planning, and a dynamic 3D driving experience to Google Maps, marking its biggest navigation overhaul in more than a decade.

TL;DR

  • Google Maps is introducing Ask Maps, a Gemini-powered conversational feature that answers complex real-world questions.
  • Users can plan trips, find places, and get personalized recommendations through natural language queries.
  • A new Immersive Navigation update adds 3D visuals, smarter route previews, and natural voice directions.
  • Both features are rolling out across the United States and India on Android and iOS.

Ask Maps is beginning its rollout across the United States and India on Android and iOS, with desktop support arriving later. Immersive Navigation is launching across the United States first, with expansion planned for additional devices including CarPlay, Android Auto, and vehicles with Google built-in.

Together, these updates signal Google’s push to transform Maps from a navigation tool into a conversational platform for discovering and navigating the physical world.

Google Maps Introduces Gemini-Powered Ask Maps For Conversational Location Search

Google is turning Maps into something closer to a digital assistant with the launch of Ask Maps, a conversational feature powered by its Gemini AI models.

Instead of manually searching and filtering results, users can now ask complex, real-world questions in natural language. Someone might ask where they can charge their phone without waiting in a long line for coffee, or whether there is a public tennis court with lights available for a late evening game.

Previously, finding such answers required scrolling through reviews and piecing together information from multiple listings. With Ask Maps, users tap the feature and receive conversational responses alongside a customized map that highlights relevant options.

The system pulls data from more than 300 million places worldwide and incorporates insights from a community of more than 500 million contributors. This enables the platform to surface practical tips such as hidden trails, local shortcuts, or ways to access attractions for free.

Trip planning also becomes more interactive. A traveler heading to the Grand Canyon, Horseshoe Bend, and Coral Dunes can ask for recommended stops along the route. Maps then returns suggested detours, estimated arrival times, and advice sourced from local reviews.

Responses are personalized based on previous searches or saved locations. If a user prefers vegan restaurants, Maps can recommend dining spots that match those preferences when planning meetups with friends.

Once a destination is selected, the feature allows users to act on those plans immediately by booking restaurant reservations, saving locations to lists, sharing them with friends, or starting navigation.

Google Maps Upgrades Navigation With Immersive 3D Driving Experience

Alongside conversational search, Google is rolling out Immersive Navigation, its most significant update to the driving experience in over a decade.

The update introduces a vivid 3D view of surroundings, allowing drivers to see buildings, terrain, and overpasses rendered along their route. Maps also highlights important road details such as lanes, traffic lights, stop signs, and crosswalks, helping drivers prepare for turns and merges more confidently.

This spatial understanding of the environment is powered by Gemini models that analyze fresh imagery from Street View and aerial photography. The result is a navigation interface that visually mirrors the real world far more closely than traditional map displays.

Google has also expanded route visibility to help drivers anticipate upcoming maneuvers. Smart zoom features and transparent building views provide a broader perspective of the road ahead, making it easier to navigate complex intersections or lane changes.

Voice guidance has also been redesigned to sound more natural. Instead of rigid instructions, the system provides directions that resemble guidance from a passenger, explaining exits and turns with clearer context.

Maps also highlights alternate route tradeoffs such as choosing between a longer drive with less traffic or a faster route that includes toll roads. Behind the scenes, the platform processes more than five million traffic updates every second to keep routes accurate.

As drivers approach their destination, the system adds another layer of assistance by showing building entrances, nearby parking spots, and which side of the street to stop on.
