Caterpillar has announced a sweeping collaboration with NVIDIA to integrate advanced artificial intelligence (AI), robotics, and digital twin technologies across its construction, mining, and manufacturing operations.

Unveiled at CES 2026, the initiative marks a new era of “Physical AI”—systems that can perceive, decide, and act in the physical world—with NVIDIA’s computing platforms driving Caterpillar’s next generation of autonomous and intelligent machinery.

Building The Next Era Of Autonomous Machinery


Caterpillar and NVIDIA are uniting their technological strengths to redefine how industrial machines operate and interact with their environments. Leveraging NVIDIA’s Jetson Thor edge AI platform, Caterpillar’s heavy equipment will now process complex sensor data locally, enabling autonomous decision-making even in remote or connectivity-limited job sites.

This real-time, on-device AI capability represents a critical step in Caterpillar’s long-term automation roadmap, enhancing productivity, safety, and operational awareness across sectors ranging from mining and construction to energy systems.

AI At The Edge And Inside The Cab


A central highlight of the collaboration is the Cat AI Assistant, revealed at CES 2026. Powered by NVIDIA’s Riva speech AI and connected to Caterpillar’s proprietary Helios data infrastructure, the assistant serves as a voice-enabled companion for operators, technicians, and managers.

It allows workers to query machine diagnostics, receive predictive maintenance alerts, and access equipment performance insights through natural conversation — directly from within the operator cab or remotely through digital applications.

By combining real-time sensor analytics with conversational intelligence, the AI assistant aims to improve machine uptime, reduce maintenance costs, and enhance user confidence in operating increasingly complex autonomous systems.
 

Digital Twins And The Industrial Metaverse


Beyond individual machines, the partnership extends into Caterpillar’s manufacturing and supply chain ecosystems. Using NVIDIA Omniverse and the OpenUSD framework, Caterpillar is developing digital twins of its factories and operational workflows to model, simulate, and optimize production in virtual environments before real-world execution.

This approach allows engineers to test new designs, predict bottlenecks, and refine energy and material efficiency using data-driven simulations. Such virtual-to-physical integration aligns with a broader industrial movement toward AI-driven smart factories, where digital twins serve as the foundation for predictive operations and sustainability.
   

From Data To Decisions And Action


The alliance signals Caterpillar’s evolution from a hardware manufacturer to a digitally native industrial technology leader. Through the integration of edge AI, robotics, and connected intelligence, Caterpillar aims to provide machines capable of reasoning, adapting, and improving over time.

Meanwhile, NVIDIA expands its leadership in industrial and embodied AI, showcasing how its chips, simulation platforms, and AI models can accelerate innovation in sectors traditionally slower to digitize.
