AI Push: Microsoft Invests $30 Billion In UK After Google’s $6.8 Billion Move
Updated on Wed, Sep 17, 2025
The visit was originally scheduled for September 17 to 19, 2025.
The two are expected to seal a trade agreement focusing on three key aspects, which include a new science and technology partnership, cooperation in civil nuclear power, and advances in defense technology cooperation.
The visit is also expected to spur a series of partnerships between companies of both countries, as well as programs beneficial to the general public and both governments, all of which come as part of the “Tech Prosperity Deal.”
On September 16, Google announced an investment of £5 billion ($6.8 billion) in the U.K., spread over the next two years. The move aims to develop the U.K.'s AI economy, unlock AI breakthroughs, and fortify cybersecurity, and is poised to create 8,250 jobs annually at U.K. businesses.
Google’s moves also drove its market capitalization above the $3 trillion mark for the first time.
Google also opened a new data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, which will house Google DeepMind, for which it also partnered with British multinational oil and gas company Shell Energy, which will act as its 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Manager in the U.K.
Now, another tech giant—and AI leader—has revealed plans to invest heavily in the U.K.
On September 17, OpenAI backer Microsoft announced a $30 billion investment in AI infrastructure and current operations in the U.K., spread across four years—from 2025 through 2028—marking the company’s largest financial commitment in the country.
The investment comprises of $15 billion that will be used to build cloud and AI infrastructure, including the country’s largest supercomputer, spanning over 23,000 NVIDIA GPUs, in partnership with Nscale.
“As an American company, Microsoft has proudly invested and operated in the United Kingdom for more than four decades, opening our first office outside the United States here in 1982, and we have scaled our presence over the years,” said Satya Nadella, Chairman and CEO of Microsoft, in a video announcing the move.”
The move builds on the two-year-old announcement that saw Microsoft pledge $3.2 billion investment in the U.K.’s AI infrastructure, which expanded its data center footprint and brought more than 20,000 of the most advanced GPUs to the country.
“The U.K. is now home to 6,000 of our employees, multiple data center regions, and some of our most important AI and Research Labs, as well as gaming studios,” added Nadella. “Together, we continue to grow, innovate, and create new opportunity for people and businesses on both sides of the Atlantic, to ensure America remains a trusted and reliable tech partner for the United Kingdom.”
Microsoft has also trained over a million people in the U.K. with the skills they need to build and work with AI.
The Microsoft and Google announcements are not the only investments that were announced.
Prior to the commencement of Trump's visit, it was expected that the U.S. and the U.K. would announce over $10 billion in economic deals.
However, by the first day, top U.S. firms racked up investment pledges hitting $42 billion (£31 billion), while both countries agreed a technology pact to propel AI, quantum computing and civil nuclear energy.
This includes NVIDIA revealing that it would deploy 120,000 GPUs across the U.K., including up to 60,000 Grace Blackwell Ultra chips with Nscale, which will work with OpenAI to build the U.K. unit of its Stargate project.
CoreWeave will pour in around $2 billion (£1.5 billion) to build energy-efficient data centers.
Salesforce said it’s bringing in $6 billion through 2030 to support U.K. and European companies’ transformation into Agentic Enterprises. It builds on the company's previous five-year commitment of $4 billion made in 2023.
Ahead of this, investments ranging from hundreds of millions to billions of pounds were announced by Scale AI, BlackRock, Oracle, Amazon Web Services, and AI Pathfinder.
Do you think these investments will hand the U.S. and the U.K. a commanding role in the global technology race?
