Google isn’t just looking to ace in the artificial intelligence (AI) arena; it’s looking to lead it!

Recently, the company announced an additional investment of $9 billion in Oklahoma and $9 billion in Virginia within the next two years in cloud and AI infrastructure, spurred by massive demand for its cloud computing services, which comes as part of total spend nearing $85 billion, with a focus on data centers.

Now, Google has announced an investment of £5 billion ($6.8 billion) in the United Kingdom over the next two years.

The idea is to help the UK develop its AI economy and unlock AI breakthroughs in the region, as well as fortify cybersecurity and create career opportunities for millions of people in the country. The company estimates the creation of 8,250 jobs annually at UK businesses.

Google has already trained over one million Britons with skills in the past decade and has now outlined new plans to train 7.5 million people by 2030.

The investment comprises Google's capital expenditure, research and development, and related engineering.

This also includes the opening of a new data center in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, which will boost Google's AI-powered services, such as Google Cloud, Workspace, Search, and Maps. It will also house Google DeepMind with its pioneering AI research in science and healthcare.

Google plans to keep up its sustainability efforts, as its data centers boast of being among the most energy-efficient ones in the world. To keep its Waltham Cross data center on the greener side, Google also said that it selected Shell Energy as its 24/7 Carbon-Free Energy Manager in the UK.

Shell will optimize Google’s current clean energy portfolio and manage a power portfolio for Google, which is expected to see Google’s UK operations run at or near 95% carbon-free-energy in 2026.

The new data center uses advanced air-cooling technology to reduce water wastage, limiting it to domestic use.

“Google's £5 billion investment is a powerful vote of confidence in the UK economy and the strength of our partnership with the US, creating jobs and economic growth for years to come,” said Rt Hon Rachel Reeves MP, Chancellor of the Exchequer, who opened the data center.

“We founded DeepMind in London because we knew the UK had the potential and talent to be a global hub for pioneering AI,” said Demis Hassabis, Co-Founder and CEO of Google DeepMind. “The UK has a rich history of being at the forefront of technology—from Lovelace to Babbage to Turing—so it's fitting that we're continuing that legacy by investing in the next wave of innovation and scientific discovery in the UK.”

Demis Hassabis is not just a leading AI scientist at Google but also one across the entire field.

Recently, Hassabis pointed out the importance of AI training.

He said that the most vital skill for the next generation will be “learning how to learn,” as they push to keep up with the technology that’s set to transform workplaces and even education.

“It’s very hard to predict the future, like 10 years from now, in normal cases. It’s even harder today, given how fast AI is changing, even week by week. The only thing you can say for certain is that huge change is coming,” said Hassabis.

He then spoke about the need for “meta-skills,” which include the ability to understand how to learn new subjects and optimize their approach. Hassabis said, “One thing we’ll know for sure is you’re going to have to continually learn ... throughout your career.”

He also said that machines that can do many things that people can do are expected to come within a decade.

Google’s presence in the AI industry has been massive, thanks to advancements made by Google DeepMind, as well as the company’s widely used and renowned Gemini models.

Recently, the company signed a six-year deal with Meta worth $10 billion, where Meta will rely on Google Cloud’s servers, storage, networking and related services.

Next, in a landmark ruling, U.S. District Judge Amit Mehta ruled that Google would not have to sell its Chrome browser or Android operating system, nor would it be barred from paying partners to push or preload its products.

The recent AI investments, coupled with the favorable antitrust ruling, have helped it rally its stocks in the last few days.

With its Class A shares growing by 3.8% and Class C shares by 3.7%—both of which were trading at record highs—its shares have rallied over 32% this year, which marks the best growth among the “Magnificent 7.”

It also took Google's market capitalization up to $3 trillion for the first time.

However, the favorable ruling that rallied Google's stocks came with some downsides—the company couldn’t enter or maintain any exclusive contracts for the same, and it would have to share Search data and user interaction with competitors.

Ahead of this, Google was fined $425 million in the United States for invading users’ privacy by illegally collecting data from millions of customers. It was also slapped with a $381 million (€325 million) fine in France for displaying ads improperly to Gmail users and using cookies without their consent.

Still, this doesn’t compare to the $3.45 billion (€2.95 billion) fine Google was handed in a historic EU ruling, which found the company “distorting competition in the advertising technology industry.”

Recently, Google was sued by Penske Media—the owner of Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Variety—for using its journalism without permission in its AI-generated summaries.

Despite these drawbacks, Google hasn’t been thrown off in its ambition to lead in the AI sector.

Do you think these moves will help Google capture a commanding position in the AI race?
