Microsoft's Copilot Mode Takes On Google and OpenAI In AI-Powered Browsing

Microsoft on Monday officially launched "Copilot Mode" in its Edge browser, integrating AI to significantly enhance the browsing experience. This move strengthens the tech giant’s position in the intensifying AI race by bringing advanced features to web browsers and search tools.

This Copilot Mode aims to simplify web browsing by grouping related tabs into topic-based queries and allowing users to compare results across all open tabs.

Microsoft says the new feature will give users a single, unified input box that combines chat, search, and web navigation, all in one place. Voice navigation for browsing is also part of the update, making things even more seamless.

This update comes at a time when AI-powered search tools are popping up everywhere. Perplexity AI recently launched its Comet browser, and there’s buzz around OpenAI working on its own AI-driven browser. Meanwhile, Google’s already introduced its “AI Mode” for search, reporting a noticeable uptick in user engagement.

Looking ahead, Copilot will get smarter, tapping into browser context with user history and saved credentials. That means it could soon handle bookings and appointments or filling out forms autonomously.

Microsoft assures users that Copilot will only access the content from all open tabs when explicitly enabled, providing clear visual cues when active. The feature is currently available for free in Copilot markets on Windows and Mac PCs for a limited period, with an opt-out option via Edge settings.

As Microsoft reimagines the browser experience with Copilot, Google is also stepping up its AI game with shopping-focused enhancements in Chrome.

Google Adds AI Shopping Insights To Chrome for U.S. Users

Google announced Monday a new AI-powered feature for its Chrome web browser, designed to assist U.S. shoppers in making informed purchase decisions. This update introduces AI-generated store summaries, directly accessible within the browser, providing quick insights into a retailer's reputation.

By simply clicking an icon to the left of the web address, users will see a pop-up detailing the store's standing regarding product quality, pricing, customer service, and return policies. These summaries are generated from reviews aggregated from various partners, including industry stalwarts like Trustpilot and Bazaarvoice.

The feature is currently limited to English on desktop, with no timeline for mobile rollout. Google says it aims to create a “safer, more efficient shopping experience,” stepping up competition with Amazon’s AI-powered reviews and suggestions.

The move is part of Google’s broader push to embed AI into its Chrome browser and evolve into a shopping hub as competition from AI-focused browsers continues to grow.

While Google fine-tunes the online shopping journey, Alibaba is taking AI to the streets with its upcoming smart glasses.

Alibaba Joins Smart Glasses Race With AI-Powered Quark Launch

Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba has officially entered the smart eyewear market with its "Quark AI Glasses," set to launch in China by late 2025. The move positions it against rivals like Meta and Xiaomi in the growing wearables space.

Powered by Alibaba’s in-house Qwen large language model and its AI assistant Quark, the Quark AI Glasses reflect the company’s push to expand its AI presence. Alibaba sees smart glasses as “the next frontier in computing alongside the smartphone,” aiming to bring Quark to more users through this hardware launch.

Alibaba says the Quark AI Glasses will support hands-free calling, music streaming, real-time translation, meeting transcription, and include a built-in camera. Tapping into its broader ecosystem, users can also access navigation, make Alipay payments, and compare prices on Taobao, all through the glasses.

While pricing and technical details are still under wraps, the launch shows its growing focus on AI-powered gadgets, adding to the rising competition in smart wearables, especially Meta’s Ray-Ban smart glasses and Oakley Meta smart glasses.

As Alibaba expands into consumer hardware, backend enablers such as Micro1 are scaling fast to power the AI models behind such innovation. So, how does it affect rivals like Scale AI and Surge AI?

Micro1 Set To Raise Series A Funding For $500 Million Valuation

Micro1, a fast-rising player in the AI data labeling space, is reportedly finalizing a Series A funding round that would value the startup at $500 million. The move highlights the growing demand for high-quality, human-curated datasets essential for training advanced AI models.

Sources familiar with the matter indicate Micro1's impressive growth, with annualized revenue reportedly soaring from $10 million earlier this year to over $50 million, and projections to exceed $100 million by the end of September.

The company attributes this rapid expansion to its AI-powered recruitment engine that efficiently connects AI labs with experts, moving beyond traditional low-wage labor pools.

Adding to its momentum, former Twitter COO Adam Bain has joined Micro1’s board, while venture firms 01A and LG Technology Ventures are expected to back the startup in its upcoming funding round.

Micro1’s rise comes as Meta-backed Scale AI faces setbacks, with major clients like Google and OpenAI reportedly reconsidering their partnerships. The shift follows Meta’s hiring of Scale AI’s CEO, Alexandr Wang, sparking concerns over potential exposure of sensitive research priorities.

With startups like Micro1 advancing AI infrastructure, consumer-facing brands like Chipotle are also quickly adopting the technology to boost efficiency.

Chipotle’s AI Tool, "Ava Cado," Is Making Hiring 75% Faster

Fast-food chain Chipotle is transforming its hiring with “Ava Cado,” an AI chatbot that’s cut time-to-hire by up to 75%, as part of its broader push to use AI for greater efficiency, both in kitchens and recruitment.

Developed by AI HR firm Paradox, Ava Cado serves as an initial point of contact for job applicants, answering questions, collecting information, and scheduling interviews with human hiring managers.

The chatbot communicates in multiple languages, including English and Spanish, and has reportedly led to a "dramatically" increased applicant pool and an 85% application completion rate.

Chipotle’s Chief HR Officer, Ilene Eskenazi, highlighted the need for efficient hiring as the company plans to launch over 300 new restaurants in 2025. Ava Cado helps ease the load by taking over interview scheduling, freeing up managers’ time.

“Maintaining our pipeline of candidates is always something that we’re very focused on,” Ilene Eskenazi said.

While the AI assists in the application and scheduling process, it does not screen resumes or make hiring decisions, ensuring human managers retain ultimate control. The company is exploring expanding Ava Cado's capabilities to further enhance the candidate’s experience.

With AI reshaping consumer and business experiences, and startups reaching higher valuations each day, it’s clear that we live in the AI innovation era.

Will you switch to Edge for its Copilot Mode or wait for pricing details? Can we trust AI in hiring as long as humans make the final decision?
