IQM Quantum Computers To Supply Finland With A World-Leading Superconducting 300-Qubit Quantum Computer

ESPOO, Finland, May 20, 2025 /PRNewswire/ -- IQM Quantum Computers has won VTT's innovation partner tender for the delivery of a 300-qubit superconducting quantum computer. The signed agreement is an excellent match with the project's main objective of putting Finland at the forefront of quantum computing development, as well as in the development and use of quantum computing in Finnish society. In addition, the innovation partners are developing new hardware components for future quantum computers, as well as strengthening Finland's unique expertise in material modelling through quantum computing.

The winning tender was from IQM Quantum Computers, whose bid was an excellent match with the strategic objectives of the project, the quantum computing performance requirements, as well as schedule requirements. The joint development project now signed will deliver a 150-qubit superconducting quantum computer in mid-2026 and a 300-qubit one in late 2027. The quantum computers will be integrated into the Finnish high-performance computing infrastructure to promote hybrid computing.

"This 300-qubit superconducting quantum computer has most superconducting qubits procured anywhere in the world. In addition, the delivery schedule is quick," says Piia Konstari, Project Manager for VTT's quantum computer tendering process.

The deliveries will put Finland at the absolute forefront in both Europe and globally in terms of quantum computing capabilities. The delivery also includes a cloud platform for businesses and university researchers to access the quantum computers, and a two-year maintenance contract after the completion of the project.

As VTT wants to promote the development and application of quantum computing in Finland, the project includes quantum computing time, which will be granted to companies and universities. VTT will grant limited free quantum computing time to qualifying applications.

"VTT's main task is to promote the development of the Finnish society. "We believe that a low threshold for use will accelerate the ability of companies and universities to research and develop applications for quantum computing. This will be a key competitive asset for Finland in the near future," says Erja Turunen, Executive Vice President, Digital Technologies at VTT.

"During the project, we will develop new devices and fabrication processes for next-generation quantum computers to ensure Finland's leadership position in critical technologies," says Pekka Pursula, Director, Microelectronics and Quantum Research at VTT.

The innovation partnership now starting will also investigate how to optimise quantum computers for the computational methods and algorithms needed in material modelling. Finland has world-leading expertise in material modelling, and by strengthening and combining this with quantum computing, we can build a global competitive advantage.

VTT was awarded a special government grant of EUR 70 million in 2024 for the development of a 300-qubit quantum computer. The search for an innovation partner started in June 2024, applications for participation were received in early August and negotiations took place throughout the rest of the year. VTT received the final bids in January 2025, and the supplier was selected in March 2025. The signed contract is valid until the end of 2027.
