What Is Object Level Recovery?
Ever accidentally deleted a database? Well, you're not alone. And if you've ever accidentally deleted a database, you know how long it takes to restore it from backup. But wait! There's good news: object-level recovery is here! Object Level Recovery is restoring individual database objects from a backup rather than the whole database. This feature of third-party products makes restoring backups from relational databases much faster and easier than converting an entire database in case some parts are accidentally deleted or corrupted. When working with a database, you must do everything you can to prevent data loss. In most cases, this means ensuring that you have regularly updated backups. However, even if you're using the best backup procedures in the world and following all best practices, sometimes things happen—especially when dealing with large databases. If a record is accidentally deleted or modified, it can take hours or days to restore just one entry from a backup into your central database. That's why they created software, so users quickly and easily identify which records have been changed. At the same time, they were offline and then copied those updates directly into their existing database without needing access to an entire backup file. This saves both time and money for our customers! So, let's say you're a database administrator, and one of your customers is having issues with their database. They've run into trouble and need to restore their database from backup. Sounds easy enough—just fix the entire thing, right? Well... maybe not. If you're using traditional backups, then that's what will happen. But what if your customer only needs to get back some specific data? What if there are artifacts in the database that they don't need or outdated information that they can just delete? That's where object-level recovery comes in. Object-level recovery lets you pick exactly which objects you want to be restored from a backup—and it can even do it without restoring everything else!
