What Is Email Handler?

TechDogs Avatar

The email handler gets the job done when you click on an email link. An email handler is a program that runs in response to an email link being clicked. So if you click on an email link, and your default or configured email client opens up, that's your email handler. If you have a specific program set up as the one that opens when you click on an email link, then that's your email handler. Many think of their default or configured email client as their "email handler" because they use it when they want to respond to an email from someone else. Yet if they have set up another program as their default or configured program and want to open it when they click on an email link? Well, then that program would be their "email handler." This is one of those things you probably don't think about very often, but when you do, it can mess up your day. Let us explain: when you click on an email address in a document or web page, your operating system or browser will run an email handler. This is the program that opens up the default email client application and prepares it to send an email message to the address you clicked on. The problem is that your default email client application has already opened up when this happens, but it still needs to be in compose mode! That means that when you start typing your message (or even just clicking on the screen), none of those actions will send anything. If this sounds familiar to you, don't worry! It happens to everyone at one point or another. The best way to avoid this problem is by ensuring that your default email client application is always in compose mode before clicking any links or addresses in emails or documents. Easy!
