What Is Electronic Civil Disobedience (ECD)?
ECD is the way to go if you're looking for a new way to protest. Electronic civil disobedience (ECD) is any civil disobedience in which protesters or participants use information technology and the Internet to carry out their protests and actions. It's basically like regular civil disobedience, but it happens on the Internet instead of in person. You might think this sounds crazy—how could you possibly get away with protesting something by sitting at home and typing on your computer? Well, it's not only possible but also happening right now! There are tons of different types of ECDs happening all over the world right now. Some people are going online and calling their representatives directly, while others are sending emails or signing petitions online. Still, others are even sending faxes from their computers! These forms of electronic civil disobedience have been highly effective at getting people's messages across in a transparent manner that doesn't require much effort on their part (or anyone else's). Electronic civil disobedience is the new wave of disruptive yet non-violent protest. Electronic civil disobedience was first used in the Critical Arts Ensemble (CAE) writings, a collective of media artists and practitioners. In their 1996 text "Electronic Civil Disobedience: And Other Unpopular Ideas," they describe how they were inspired by Henry David Thoreau's 1848 text “Civil Disobedience”There's a reason why the CAE, who coined the term ECD, believe that it's essential for people to continue to engage in disruptive protests even when their actions are not illegal. They believe this will help disrupt those who would otherwise be able to use power to silence dissenters and oppress others. They also know that social media is the best way for people to know about this. You can help them spread the word by sharing this post with your friends and family!
