Waymo Picks Munich For Germany Robotaxi Push, Targets Late 2027 Launch

Waymo is preparing to bring its fully autonomous ride-hailing service to Munich, putting a major US robotaxi operator in the heart of Germany’s automotive industry.

However, riders will have to wait, with commercial service targeted for late 2027.

The Alphabet-owned company says it has completed more than 20 million trips and now serves hundreds of thousands of commercial rides each week.

Waymo Begins Munich Mapping And Testing Ahead Of Late 2027 Robotaxi Launch

Waymo’s first phase in Munich will involve manually driving across the city to map local streets and understand its distinct driving conditions. It will then begin autonomous testing with trained specialists behind the wheel as the Waymo Driver is validated for local use.

The company is already engaging with local, state, and federal officials on the approvals needed to eventually serve passengers in Germany.

“Munich is a world-class hub for mobility and engineering, and becoming part of this city marks an important milestone in our global expansion,” said Waymo co-CEO Tekedra Mawakana.
 

 

Germany’s Level 4 Autonomous Driving Rules Give Waymo A Path To Market

Waymo’s Munich push comes more than five years after Germany adopted legislation allowing driverless vehicles on public roads, becoming the first European Union country to establish a legal framework for Level 4 autonomous driving.

Level 4 systems can handle all driving within defined operating conditions without expecting a human to take over. Several companies, including Mobileye and Volkswagen, hold permits to test autonomous vehicles in Germany, while Waymo does not currently hold one, according to the supplied material.

"Waymo, the world’s leading provider of commercial robotaxi services, has now recognised Germany’s potential as a location offering legal certainty. It is currently planning to start regular commercial operation of autonomous vehicles on the German market for the first time," Christian Hirte, Parliamentary State Secretary in Germany’s Federal Ministry of Transport said.

"The fact that a company like Waymo is looking to Germany highlights how attractive our market is and proves that regular autonomous mobility services can work here. We must now leverage the strengths of our economy and develop autonomous mobility solutions from within Europe. 
 

 

Waymo Leans On Safety And Accessibility Data For Its Munich Expansion

Waymo says data from more than 350 million fully autonomous kilometers shows 16 times fewer serious injury crashes compared with human drivers, along with 14 times fewer pedestrian crashes with injury and six times fewer cyclist crashes with injury.

The company is also positioning autonomous ride-hailing as an accessibility option. Maik Schubert, CEO of the Schubert & Wetzel Guide Dog School, said autonomous vehicles could offer blind and visually impaired people greater independence while reducing barriers some guide dog users face with traditional taxi and ride-hailing services.
