Tesla, Uber & Waymo Get Nevada’s "OK" For Up To 8,000 Robotaxis
Updated on Fri, Aug 21, 2026
Nevada has cleared Tesla, Uber, and Waymo to deploy thousands of commercial robotaxis in Clark County, even as Tesla admits it may reach only about half its approved limit.
That still puts Las Vegas on course to become a major battleground for autonomous ride-hailing.
TL;DR
- Nevada approved commercial robotaxi permits for Tesla, Uber, and Waymo in Clark County.
- The permits could bring up to 8,000 autonomous vehicles to the region over the next 12 months.
- Tesla received the largest allowance at 5,000 vehicles, although it expects actual deployment to be considerably lower.
- Local transportation groups warned about congestion, oversaturation, and pressure on human drivers.
Nevada Approves Up To 8,000 Robotaxis For Clark County
The Nevada Transportation Authority unanimously approved three permits that allow Tesla, Uber, and Waymo to operate commercial robotaxi services across Clark County, home to Las Vegas.
Tesla received approval for up to 5,000 robotaxis, while Waymo can deploy as many as 1,000 autonomous vehicles over the next year. Uber was also approved for 1,000 robotaxis, which it plans to operate through partnerships with Hyundai subsidiary Motional and Zoox.
Zoox already holds a separate autonomous vehicle network company permit allowing it to operate 100 robotaxis.
However, the approved numbers represent potential capacity rather than firm deployment targets.

Tesla Says Its 5,000-Robotaxi Permit Is A Ceiling, Not A Target
Tesla Cybercab chief engineer Eric Early made that distinction clear during the meeting.
“The 5,000 has always been a ceiling for us,” said Early. “I don’t think we’ll be in a position by this time next year to deploy 5,000 vehicles, and it’s not [because of] the technology. … I think we would be extremely happy and satisfied if we could get ourselves up to 2,500, maybe a bit higher than that in the next year.”
Even if Tesla, Uber, and Waymo deploy only a fraction of their permitted fleets, Las Vegas could still see thousands of autonomous vehicles competing for the same riders.
That expansion also raises a bigger question around what happens to the people currently driving them.
Las Vegas Robotaxi Expansion Raises Traffic And Jobs Concerns
Robotaxi operators could create new roles involving vehicle maintenance, charging, and cleaning, while simultaneously threatening demand for human taxi and gig drivers.
Representatives from local taxi companies and the Livery Operators Association opposed the permits, arguing that Nevada is moving too quickly.
“These applications raise two grave concerns,” said Kimberly Maxson-Rushton, a lawyer representing the Livery Operators Association. “One deals with the oversaturation of the commercial transportation industry as a whole in Nevada. And the second one deals with the overcrowding of the roadways, and specifically the Golden Triangle.”
The Golden Triangle, covering the area between the airport and Las Vegas Boulevard, has already hosted much of the region’s autonomous vehicle testing.

Uber Pushes A Hybrid Human And Robotaxi Model In Nevada
Amid concerns over rapid deployment, Uber is positioning itself between fully autonomous operators and traditional ride-hailing.
The company has advocated for networks combining human drivers with robotaxis, arguing that cities could gradually add autonomous vehicles to handle peak demand instead of flooding roads with them at once.
That approach also gives Uber room to expand autonomous services through partners while keeping human drivers inside its network, even as Tesla and Waymo pursue their own robotaxi ambitions.
Las Vegas may now have regulatory approval for thousands of robotaxis, but how quickly those vehicles actually reach its streets could determine how disruptive the shift becomes.
