Overall Rating

Tesla and SpaceX will initially invest $16.8 billion to build Terafab, a massive semiconductor manufacturing complex in Grimes County, Texas, designed to produce AI chips for Tesla's robots and Cybercabs and SpaceX's planned space-based data centers.

TL;DR

  • Tesla and SpaceX will initially invest $16.8 billion in the Terafab semiconductor complex in Texas.
  • The planned facility will span more than 100 million square feet and employ at least 3,000 people.
  • Terafab will manufacture, package and test advanced logic and memory chips for Tesla and SpaceX, while later expansion could push total investment considerably higher.

Reuters reported that Elon Musk-led Tesla and SpaceX will build Terafab in Grimes County, Texas, as the companies look to secure more semiconductor capacity for their increasingly compute-intensive operations.

The $16.8 billion figure represents the newly announced initial investment in the project. Reuters noted that the companies expect their future computing requirements to exceed 1 terawatt, creating demand for substantially more chip production capacity.

TechCrunch similarly reported that the project will be located outside Houston and is expected to provide more than 100 million square feet of manufacturing space. SpaceX and Tesla expect the facility to employ at least 3,000 people from Grimes County and neighboring Brazos County.

Yahoo Finance also reported the $16.8 billion investment, more than 100 million square feet of planned space and at least 3,000 expected jobs.

Terafab Will Make AI Chips For Optimus, Cybercabs And SpaceX

Terafab is being designed as a vertically integrated semiconductor facility where advanced logic and memory chips can be manufactured, packaged and tested at one site.

SpaceX said the facility is intended to bridge the gap between today's chip supply and future computing demand. The company described Terafab as a plant that will support faster development by bringing multiple stages of semiconductor production under the same roof.

The chips produced at Terafab are expected to power products across Musk's companies.

For Tesla, that includes chips optimized for edge computing and inference in Optimus humanoid robots and self-driving Cybercabs. SpaceX plans to use higher-power chips for its proposed space-based data centers.

Musk called Terafab the “largest and most valuable building on Earth by far,” according to TechCrunch. He also said the project would enable the companies to manufacture AI chips at scale for applications “on Earth and in space,” Reuters reported.

Terafab Could Eventually Become A Much Bigger Investment

While $16.8 billion is the initial amount announced for the project, the total investment could become substantially larger if SpaceX and Tesla pursue additional construction phases.

Reuters reported that a May filing had previously proposed an initial investment of $55 billion, with spending potentially reaching $119 billion if further phases were completed. The latest announcement sets the immediate starting investment at $16.8 billion.

TechCrunch also noted that SpaceX filings had contemplated as much as $119 billion in spending across a multi-phase construction program.

Intel is also involved in the project. Reuters reported that SpaceX partnered with the chipmaker earlier this year as Intel looks to expand its contract semiconductor manufacturing operations, although the exact scope of Intel's contribution to Terafab has not been disclosed.

Tesla, meanwhile, broke ground in April on a research facility at the North Campus of its Giga Texas plant, which Reuters described as a precursor to Terafab.

Terafab Also Faces Local Scrutiny In Texas

The scale of the project has also attracted attention from residents around its planned site.

TechCrunch reported that hundreds of people attended a Grimes County meeting ahead of the announcement, where residents raised concerns about tax incentives for the development and what they viewed as a lack of transparency around the project.

Water consumption has also emerged as an issue for a semiconductor facility of this size. SpaceX said Terafab will use water from the nearby Gibbons Creek Reservoir for industrial operations rather than drawing from local groundwater supplies.

Texas Governor Greg Abbott welcomed the investment, saying, “Texas is where big ideas grow even bigger,” according to Reuters.

For Tesla and SpaceX, Terafab represents an attempt to bring a critical part of their AI infrastructure in-house as demand grows across autonomous vehicles, robotics and space-based computing.
