System Failure Stops Dozens Of Baidu Self-Driving Cars In Wuhan, Passengers Stranded!
Updated on Wed, Apr 1, 2026
TL;DR
- Dozens of Baidu robotaxis in Wuhan stopped suddenly.
- Around 100 vehicles were affected, and some passengers were trapped for nearly two hours.
- The incident highlights that robotaxis are still not fully reliable.
In Wuhan, central China, a “system failure” caused a major disruption for Baidu’s Apollo Go fleet, local police said on Wednesday. Reports came in late Tuesday that dozens of Apollo Go cars had stopped in the middle of roads and couldn’t move.
At least 100 vehicles were affected, a traffic police officer said in a video published by Shanghai-based news outlet The Paper. While the car doors could be opened, some passengers were hesitant to step out because of heavy traffic and called the police for help.
Local media reported that some passengers were trapped inside for nearly two hours. The cause is still under investigation, and Baidu hasn’t commented yet.
The incident has sparked renewed conversations online about robotaxi safety. While autonomous vehicles are growing fast, these kinds of problems remind people that the technology isn’t perfect yet.
Topics For More Insights:
This isn’t the first hiccup for robotaxis in China. In August, an Apollo Go car fell into a construction pit in Chongqing, and in May, a vehicle operated by Pony.ai caught fire on a road in Beijing.
Luckily, no one was hurt in either case. Even abroad, problems can happen as a power outage in San Francisco late last year caused Waymo robotaxis to stall and block traffic.
Baidu is one of China’s biggest players in self-driving fleets, along with Pony.ai and WeRide. It has launched services in major cities and is even expanding overseas, including the Middle East. Well, these recent incidents show that while robotaxis are promising, there’s still work to do before we can fully trust them on busy city roads.
