Picking the right music often starts with a feeling, and not a genre or playlist name. As listeners look for simpler, more intuitive ways to match sound with mood, streaming platforms are turning to AI to close that gap.
Well, Spotify’s latest update responds to that shift. Spotify is taking another step toward making playlist creation easier and more personal with the rollout of Prompted Playlists.
TL;DR
- Spotify introduces AI-powered Prompted Playlists for Premium users in the U.S. and Canada.
- The tool allows natural, conversational prompts instead of structured ones.
- Users can tailor playlists to moods, activities, or even non-musical inspirations.
- The system analyzes listening history, trends, and culture for personalization.
- Feature currently in beta and available only in English.
The tool builds on Spotify’s earlier AI playlist feature introduced in 2024, which relied on short, structured prompts such as mood or activity-based requests. Prompted Playlists expands that idea by allowing users to describe what they want to hear in a more detailed, conversational way.
In a press demo, Spotify showcased how users can type long prompts, like asking the AI to introduce them to a new artist they’re likely to enjoy and arrange songs in a way that feels like a guided introduction to that artist’s catalog. According to Spotify, the goal is to remove the friction from music discovery.
“For most people, [music curation] isn’t a part of their job. You don’t always have the time or the energy to keep building the perfect playlist every time your mood changes, and that’s where prompted playlists will come in,” said J.J. Italiano, head of Global Music Curation and Discovery at Spotify.
“This gives listeners access to that creative process without needing to know genres, or years, or industry language. You don’t need the right words. You just need your words,’’ Italiano added.
The AI analyzes real-time music trends, charts, culture, and history, alongside a user’s full listening history. While playlists are personalized by default, users can also ask the system to ignore their past habits or surface entirely new music.

Prompts don’t need to reference music at all; they can be inspired by weather, TV shows, or a specific feeling. Spotify says Prompted Playlists represent the “next evolution” of its AI playlist efforts.
The older feature will remain active alongside it, though the overlap could cause some confusion. Spotify hasn’t shared a timeline for a global rollout, saying it wants to learn from these initial markets first.
