Snap Settles Lawsuit With Teens Alleging Snapchat Addiction Caused Mental Health Issues
Updated on Tue, Nov 3, 2026
Snap Inc., the parent company of Snapchat, has reached a settlement with two teenagers who accused the social media company of designing its platform to encourage addictive behavior, allegedly contributing to depression, anxiety, and eating disorders.
The settlement, reached on November 2, 2026, comes amid thousands of lawsuits against major social media companies over allegations that their platforms deliberately encourage compulsive use among children and teenagers.
Here's what happened.
TL;DR
- Snap settled a lawsuit brought by two teenagers alleging Snapchat's addictive design contributed to mental health problems.
- The plaintiffs had previously settled with Meta, TikTok, and YouTube.
- Snap CEO Evan Spiegel was expected to testify in the trial.
- The settlement terms remain undisclosed, while further trials involving social media companies are scheduled for March 2027.
Snap Settles With Two Teens Amid Social Media Addiction Lawsuits
According to a report by Reuters, Snap reached a settlement with two teenage plaintiffs during proceedings in a Los Angeles state court, where the company faced allegations that its platform was intentionally designed to encourage compulsive use.
The plaintiffs, identified as S.J., a 16-year-old girl from Illinois, and K.D.B., an 18-year-old from Mississippi, alleged that prolonged social media use contributed to depression, anxiety, eating disorders, and other mental health problems.
The teenagers claimed they began using YouTube as early as age three and other social media platforms around age nine, eventually developing compulsive usage habits that they attributed to features such as autoplay and infinite scrolling.
The lawsuit involved Snap, Meta Platforms, TikTok, and Alphabet-owned YouTube, all of which had been accused of developing platform features that encouraged excessive engagement among younger users.
However, the two plaintiffs had already settled their claims against Meta, TikTok, and YouTube before reaching an agreement with Snap.
Jury selection for the Los Angeles trial began in the final week of October 2026, with Snap expected to face its first trial in the broader litigation involving alleged social media addiction.
Snap CEO Evan Spiegel was also expected to testify before the settlement was reached.
As reported by TechCrunch, the settlement brings an end to the proceedings against Snap in these two cases, although the company and other social media platforms continue to face wider legal challenges.
The financial terms of the settlement were not disclosed.
What Did Snap And The Plaintiffs' Lawyers Say?
In a statement provided to TechCrunch, a Snap spokesperson said, "The Parties are pleased to have been able to resolve this matter in an amicable manner."
The spokesperson added that the company had introduced safeguards, launched safety tutorials, and collaborated with experts to improve user protection.
Snap also reiterated its commitment to "continually strengthening the safety, privacy, and well-being of our community."
Meanwhile, the plaintiffs' legal representatives maintained that the settlements were part of broader efforts to hold social media companies accountable for their alleged impact on young users.
According to Reuters, John Morgan and Emily Jeffcott, trial attorneys representing plaintiff K.D.B., said their goal was to pursue accountability for the alleged harm affecting children across the United States.
Social media companies, including Snap, have disputed allegations that their platforms were intentionally designed to addict young users, maintaining that they have introduced measures to improve safety.
The settlements do not establish that Snapchat caused the plaintiffs' reported mental health conditions.
Social Media Companies Face Thousands Of Similar Lawsuits
The settlement comes amid mounting legal scrutiny of how social media platforms influence children's behavior and mental well-being.
Reuters reported that thousands of lawsuits have been filed in US federal and state courts by individuals, school districts, municipalities, and other government bodies.
These lawsuits allege that social media companies knowingly developed features that encourage excessive use among children, potentially contributing to mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, and suicidal behavior.
Earlier in 2026, a Los Angeles jury found Meta and YouTube negligent in a separate social media addiction case and awarded a young woman $6 million in damages.
In August 2026, Meta also reached settlements worth up to $18 billion with nearly every US state and territory over allegations involving harm to teenagers.
Topics for more insights:
The agreements included changes to how Instagram and Facebook operate for teenage users, while $5 billion of the proposed payout was conditional on states reaching similar settlements with Snap, TikTok, and YouTube.
The latest Snap settlement is particularly significant because the case was selected as a bellwether trial, intended to test legal arguments and potentially influence the resolution of similar lawsuits.
Although this settlement prevents a jury verdict against Snap in these particular cases, it does not resolve the broader legal dispute over social media platform design and youth safety.
According to Reuters, the next bellwether trials are scheduled to begin in March 2027.
For Snap and other social media companies, the continuing litigation keeps attention on platform engagement features, children's online safety, and the responsibilities technology companies have toward their youngest users.
