Sam Altman Calls India A Global Leader In AI Development At India AI Impact Summit 2026

Speaking at the summit, Altman praised India’s rapid progress in AI and its growing global role. He described it as “incredible to India’s leadership and advanced AI”. He said, “It is striking how much progress India has made in its mission to put AI to work for more people in more parts of the country. And India's leadership in sovereign AI… has been great to watch”.
Emphasizing India’s importance to OpenAI, Altman noted the scale of adoption in the country. “One and a hundred million people in India use ChatGPT every week. India is also the fastest growing market now for CodeX. India, the world's largest democracy, is well-positioned to lead in AI not just to build it but to shape it and decide what our future is going to look like”.
Altman also talked about the need for regulation as AI systems become more powerful. He said the world “urgently” needs to regulate the fast-evolving technology and suggested that an organization could be created to coordinate global efforts, similar to the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
