Reliance Jio Wants To Turn 8-Year-Old PCs Into AI-Ready Machines

Reliance Jio is betting that India’s next AI-capable computer may not be a new computer at all. By opening JioPC to any internet user, the company wants aging PCs to tap cloud-based computing power instead of being replaced.

Reliance Jio Opens JioPC To All Internet Users In India

First launched in July 2025, JioPC was previously tied to Jio’s broadband services. The expansion removes that restriction, allowing users to subscribe regardless of their telecom or broadband provider.

Instead of depending primarily on a computer’s local hardware, JioPC streams a virtual PC from Jio’s cloud infrastructure. Plans start at ₹1,000, about $11, for two months, while annual subscriptions cost ₹4,000, around $42, for 8GB of RAM and 500GB of storage, or ₹5,000, about $53, for 16GB of RAM and 1TB of storage.

That gives Jio a simple proposition: keep the aging PC and move more of the computing elsewhere. The company says machines as old as eight years can gain the resources needed for modern applications, including AI services, without installing new hardware.
 

 

JioPC Bets On Longer PC Replacement Cycles In India

The timing matters because Indians are already keeping their computers for longer.

IDC estimates put India’s installed PC base at more than 65 million machines in 2025, including roughly 34 million consumer PCs and 31 million commercial systems. That figure is expected to approach 69 million by the end of 2026.

Consumers and small businesses typically replace PCs every five to six years, compared with four to five years in 2022, according to IDC senior market analyst Bharath Shenoy. Enterprise replacement cycles have also stretched to around four years from three previously.

JioPC could push those lifecycles further by separating computing capability from the physical device.

As CyberMedia Research Vice President Prabhu Ram said, “Jio is broadening its value proposition by opening JioPC to non-Jio users, while also challenging the traditional hardware upgrade cycle.”
 

 

JioPC’s AI-Ready Cloud PC Pitch Still Depends On Stable Internet

That challenge does not mean conventional PCs are going away. Ram expects JioPC to potentially create a parallel, price-sensitive market for households, students, and others for whom buying a new AI-capable computer was never realistically on the table.

There are trade-offs, though. JioPC requires a stable internet connection, meaning disruptions can affect the experience, particularly in smaller cities and towns where affordable computing has significant room to grow. Refurbished PCs also remain an alternative for consumers who want inexpensive hardware without remaining dependent on connectivity.

There is another distinction in Jio’s “AI-ready” positioning. Its disclosed specifications do not mention dedicated AI accelerators for on-device generative AI workloads, a key feature associated with the latest generation of AI PCs.

The bigger test is whether consumers eventually see cloud computing as a “daily utility” rather than an “opportunistic workaround,” as Ram described it. Jio is not just asking Indians to keep their PCs longer, it is asking them to rethink whether computing power needs to be owned at all.
