Meta and Reliance Industries are expanding their strategic partnership with a new AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat, giving Meta its first built-to-suit AI data center capacity in India and strengthening the country’s role in global AI infrastructure.
TL;DR
- Meta will lease 168 MW of data center capacity from Reliance in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
- Reliance will build the facility, with options to scale the capacity later.
- Meta also announced clean energy agreements in India totaling nearly 1 GW.
- The move builds on Meta’s earlier $5.7 billion investment in Jio Platforms and its AI collaboration with Reliance.
Meta Platforms and Reliance Industries have announced a major expansion of their strategic partnership, centered on an AI-enabled data center in Jamnagar, Gujarat.
As part of the agreement, Reliance will build a data center with 168 MW capacity, which Meta will lease. The companies said the facility will also include options to scale over time, making it a notable step in Meta’s global AI infrastructure expansion.
The Jamnagar facility will be Meta’s first AI-enabled data center in India and its first built-to-suit data center capacity in the country. Meta said the investment is aimed at bringing infrastructure that powers its products and AI capabilities closer to one of its largest and fastest-growing user communities globally.
“We’re proud to be working with Reliance to build our first AI-enabled data center in India. This world-class facility in Jamnagar will help us scale our AI infrastructure globally while deepening our long-term investment in India’s economy,” said Mark Zuckerberg, Founder and CEO of Meta.
The project also places Reliance more deeply into the AI infrastructure race. Jamnagar is already a strategic location for Reliance, and Meta said Reliance is developing one of the largest data center campuses in the world there, backed by access to significant energy resources needed for advanced AI infrastructure.
Reliance Chairman and Managing Director Mukesh D. Ambani called the partnership “a transformative moment for India’s digital infrastructure,” adding that building India’s first built-to-suit AI data center for a global technology leader of Meta’s scale shows India’s readiness to be at the forefront of the global AI revolution.
The two companies also highlighted sustainability around the project. Meta said the Jamnagar data center will be powered by renewable energy and cooled with desalinated seawater, with Meta covering the full cost of the energy and water supporting the facility.
Separately, Meta announced clean energy agreements with two Indian providers. CleanMax will support 837 MW of new solar and wind projects in Rajasthan and Karnataka, bringing Meta’s cumulative announced capacity with CleanMax to over 900 MW. Fourth Partner Energy will support 88 MW of new solar and wind projects across Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Maharashtra, and Uttar Pradesh.
The data center agreement builds on a partnership that has been developing for years. In 2020, Meta invested $5.7 billion in Jio Platforms, Reliance’s digital services arm. The companies later deepened their collaboration through AI-focused work involving Meta’s open-source Llama models for Indian enterprises and developers.

Reuters also reported that India’s data center market is expected to nearly double to $13.11 billion by 2034, driven by digital transformation, cloud services, and rising AI demand. That makes the Meta-Reliance deal part of a larger infrastructure shift as global technology companies look for high-capacity compute locations outside traditional markets.
For Meta, the move is about AI scale. For Reliance, it strengthens its position as a key infrastructure partner for hyperscale AI workloads in India. For India, it signals that AI infrastructure is quickly moving from software ambition to physical capacity, energy planning, and large-scale data center development.
