OpenAI says people worldwide now generate approximately 4 billion images every week across ChatGPT, Codex, and its API, averaging more than half a billion images daily.

The latest update is designed to make those image-generation workflows faster while extending their capabilities beyond static visuals.

ChatGPT Can Now Turn Photos, Sketches And Ideas Into Animated GIFs

One of the most notable additions to Images 2.6 is animated GIF generation, which allows users to create moving visuals through natural-language prompts.

Users can upload an existing photograph or sketch, or describe an idea from scratch, and instruct ChatGPT to produce a looping animation. The functionality opens up use cases ranging from animated portraits and social media reactions to marketing creatives and product demonstrations.

As Money Control reported, users can describe the desired movements, background, animation style, number of frames, and frame duration when creating GIFs.

The publication also highlighted examples involving birthday greetings, animated pet photographs, pencil sketches, promotional product animations, and old family photographs.

OpenAI's own announcement demonstrates how GIFs can be generated using sequential animation frames, including examples featuring cartoon characters responding to changing stock-market charts.

The company also highlighted how businesses can animate brand mascots, generate memes, and develop animated storyboards before moving into full-scale video production.

“GIFs are the native language of social media, and GPT-Image-2.6 lets every OpenArt creator speak it fluently from a single prompt,” said Coco Mao, CEO and co-founder of OpenArt, in OpenAI's announcement.

The new feature could make short-form animated content more accessible to users who lack experience with conventional animation software.

Images 2.6 Brings 50% Faster Generation And Improved Editing

Beyond GIF creation, OpenAI says Images 2.6 generates images 50% faster than before, while improving the model's ability to follow editing instructions.

The company has introduced two models for developers using its API: GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and GPT-Image-2.6 Sunburst.

Flare prioritizes speed and can generate images in as little as six seconds when the quality setting is configured to low. It also improves layouts for marketing posters, product imagery, and other professional visuals.

Sunburst focuses on higher image quality and greater consistency across editing rounds, particularly when configured with medium or high image-quality settings.

According to Tech2, the improvements allow users to refine visual elements while maintaining the appearance of characters, products, and branding across multiple edits.

For marketers, designers, and content creators, maintaining those details is particularly important when generating multiple assets for the same campaign.

Developers Get Image Markup, SVG Export And New API Controls

OpenAI has also expanded the editing and customization capabilities available to developers.

Image markup, which was already available in ChatGPT, is now supported in the API. This enables developers to identify specific areas of an image that require changes, rather than relying exclusively on general editing instructions.

The release also introduces SVG export support, allowing generated designs to be used in websites, applications, and print materials.

Additionally, a new complexity parameter enables developers to adjust how much planning the model applies when generating or editing images.

OpenAI recommends lower complexity settings for simpler editing tasks and medium or higher settings for scenes involving multiple elements or detailed constraints.

“GPT-Image-2.6 brings speed and creative control together, helping you generate and edit images while preserving the details that define a character, product, or brand,” said Itay Schiff, Creative Director at Figma Weave, in OpenAI's announcement.

The company also highlighted early use cases involving creative platforms and businesses. For example, workplace AI assistant startup Town explored using animated characters to make everyday workplace interactions more expressive.

Images 2.6 Availability And What It Means For Users

OpenAI confirmed that Images 2.6 became available globally across all ChatGPT subscription tiers and in Codex, with support on desktop, mobile, and web.

Developers can also access GPT-Image-2.6 Flare and Sunburst through the API, with pricing dependent on the selected model and usage.

The release expands how users can create visual content in ChatGPT, particularly through animated GIFs and more precise image editing.

While faster generation and improved visual consistency could reduce the time required to produce creative assets, the quality of GIF animations will still depend on the instructions, generation settings, and complexity of the requested movement.

With Images 2.6, OpenAI is extending its image-generation capabilities into animation and more advanced design workflows, giving individuals and businesses additional ways to create visual content using AI.
