Overall Rating
Big tech companies have been pouring billions into AI startups as the race to build advanced AI systems heats up. NVIDIA, whose chips power many of these AI models, has also been one of the biggest supporters of leading AI companies. Well, now, that phase of large investments may be slowing down.

TL;DR

  • NVIDIA CEO says OpenAI and Anthropic may be its last major investments.
  • OpenAI is reportedly preparing for an IPO that could value the company at up to $1 trillion.
  • NVIDIA earlier dropped a planned $100B deal with OpenAI due to AI market concerns.

NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang has hinted that the company’s recent investments in OpenAI and Anthropic could be its last in those startups, especially as both companies move closer to potential public listings.

Speaking at the Morgan Stanley Technology, Media and Telecom conference on Wednesday, Huang said the opportunity to invest $100 billion in OpenAI is probably not in the cards anymore. The ChatGPT creator is preparing for an IPO later this year.

NVIDIA and OpenAI had earlier announced plans for a $100 billion deal in September last year. However, NVIDIA eventually finalized a $30 billion investment instead. Huang said this might be the last time the company gets the chance to “invest in a consequential company like this.”

OpenAI is reportedly building the foundation for an IPO that could value the company at up to $1 trillion. NVIDIA has also invested about $10 billion in Anthropic. Huang said this investment could also be the last one in the company, as the AI startup is reportedly exploring a public listing this year. However, Anthropic has said it has not finalized any decision about going public yet.

Earlier this year, reports also suggested that NVIDIA and OpenAI dropped their planned $100 billion deal due to concerns about the AI market. Some analysts also questioned the structure of the deal, saying NVIDIA’s investment in Anthropic could make it a major investor in one of its own customers, with the money likely being spent on NVIDIA’s AI chips.

For now, NVIDIA continues to power their AI systems, even if the phase of massive funding deals may start to slow down.
