Overall Rating

Meta has removed the controversial part of its new Muse Image generator that let people reference public Instagram accounts in AI prompts. The reversal came only three days after launch, following criticism over consent, likeness rights and nonconsensual image manipulation.

Importantly, Meta has not discontinued Muse Image itself. It has only withdrawn the capability that allowed users to mention public Instagram accounts and use their photos as visual references.

TL;DR

  • Meta removed Muse Image’s public Instagram account referencing feature three days after launch.
  • Public adult accounts were included by default, while private accounts and users under 18 were excluded.
  • Critics warned of impersonation, harassment, sextortion and nonconsensual digital replicas.
  • Muse Image’s other generation and editing tools remain available.

What Did Meta Remove From Muse Image?

Meta launched Muse Image on July 7, 2026, describing it as the first image-generation model developed by Meta Superintelligence Labs. The model can create images from prompts, edit photos, combine visual references, render text and power creative experiences across Meta AI, Instagram and WhatsApp.

At launch, Meta also allowed people to mention public Instagram accounts in prompts. Muse Image could then draw from public photos connected to those accounts and incorporate the people or visual references into newly generated images.

Meta promoted the feature for invitations, collaborative concepts and personalized graphics. However, account owners were not notified when their public content was referenced, and the setting was enabled by default for public adult accounts, with private profiles and users under 18 excluded.

Meta’s AI chief Alexandr Wang introduced Muse Image as the first image generation model from Meta Superintelligence Labs and said it paired with Muse Spark to reason through prompts, search the web and plan before generating an image.

Why Did The Feature Face A Privacy Backlash?

The controversy centered on consent. Critics argued that making photos public on Instagram did not amount to permission for other people to transform someone’s likeness through generative AI.

Users could originally opt out through Instagram’s Sharing and reuse settings, but privacy advocates objected to placing the burden on individuals to discover and disable the control. The feature also raised concerns about impersonation, harassment, nonconsensual sexual imagery and scams involving manipulated likenesses.

Haley McNamara, Executive Director and Chief Strategy Officer of the National Center on Sexual Exploitation, called the design unacceptable because users had to jump through hoops to opt out. SAG-AFTRA also urged members to change their Instagram settings to protect their likenesses.

Meta reversed the rollout on July 10. The company said it had heard feedback that the feature missed the mark and confirmed that it was no longer available, while adding that its intent was to provide a creative tool and give users control over public content.

SAG-AFTRA welcomed the decision, saying a feature that encouraged nonconsensual digital replicas was unwise and discontinuing it was the right thing to do.

What Happens To Muse Image Now?

Muse Image remains active for other forms of image generation and editing. Meta’s product page still lists presets, photo restoration, room redesigns, direct image editing, Instagram Story effects and WhatsApp image generation.

The reversal shows the difficulty technology companies face when combining generative AI with social platforms built around personal photos. For Meta, the episode reinforces a simple product lesson: users may reject AI features that treat consent as an opt-out rather than a clear choice.
