Meta's Camera-Free Luna Smart Glasses Could Launch In October

Meta is developing a new smart glasses model internally called Luna that would ship without cameras. Instead, the wearable would focus heavily on voice-based AI interaction through six built-in microphones.

Users would reportedly be able to speak with Meta's AI chatbot and Muse, its consumer AI agent. Luna is also expected to feature a side button for quickly activating Meta AI, along with speakers similar to those available on Meta's existing smart glasses.

The company could unveil Luna at its annual Meta Connect developer conference, while October is reportedly being targeted for shipments. However, Meta has not publicly confirmed the product and did not immediately respond to a request for comment, according to reports.

Meta's Smart Glasses Privacy Crackdown Puts Luna's Camera-Free Design In Context

The timing is difficult to overlook.

Earlier this month, Meta disabled cameras on thousands of smart glasses after detecting devices where users had covered, altered or physically removed the recording indicator designed to notify nearby people when photos or videos were being captured.

Meta Vice President of Wearables Alex Himel said the enforcement affected less than one-tenth of 1% of devices sold. Analysts estimated more than seven million Meta smart glasses were sold in 2025 alone, putting even that small percentage into the thousands, as per reports.

Meta deployed a software update to detect such modifications and disable the affected camera units. Himel said the company would continue updating its protections so the capture LED could reliably warn bystanders when photos or videos are being recorded.

Meta has also reportedly been targeting content and accounts promoting LED-tampering services as part of its broader enforcement efforts. Himel described the effort as a "cat and mouse game," reflecting the difficulty of preventing users from circumventing the safeguard.
 

 

Meta's Smart Glasses Still Face Broader Privacy Questions

The controversy extends beyond people tampering with indicator lights.

Meta is also facing a class action lawsuit alleging that the privacy practices surrounding its AI glasses were misrepresented, including allegations involving captured images, human reviewers and bystanders who did not provide informed consent. These remain allegations in litigation, not established legal findings.

Against that backdrop, Luna could give Meta a different route for expanding AI wearables. Removing the camera would not resolve every privacy question surrounding microphone-equipped AI glasses, but it would eliminate the hardware feature at the center of Meta's latest recording controversy.

For consumers interested in hands-free AI without an always-available camera, that distinction could become Luna's defining feature.
