Meta Bans TikTok Ads On Facebook And Instagram Across 7 Countries
Updated on Fri, Oct 9, 2026
Meta has banned advertisements from TikTok's Chinese parent company, ByteDance, across Facebook and Instagram in seven countries, including the United States, Canada, and Japan. The restriction also extends to third-party advertisers promoting TikTok-related content, escalating the competition between two of the world's biggest social media platforms.
The decision, which took effect on October 8, 2026, comes as Meta and TikTok continue competing for users, creators, and advertising revenue.
Here's what happened.
TL;DR
- Meta has banned ByteDance and TikTok-related advertisements across its platforms in seven countries.
- The restriction covers the US, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam.
- Third-party advertisements linking to TikTok and other ByteDance properties are also affected.
- Meta says it is standard business practice to refuse promotional services to direct competitors.
Why Has Meta Banned TikTok Ads On Facebook And Instagram?
According to Reuters, Meta has stopped accepting advertisements and paid promotional messages from ByteDance, the company behind TikTok, across seven markets.
The decision was first reported by Bloomberg News, which revealed that Meta had begun implementing the restrictions on Thursday, October 8.
The ban covers the United States, Canada, Egypt, Indonesia, Japan, Thailand, and Vietnam, with immediate effect.
More importantly, the restriction isn't limited to advertisements purchased directly by ByteDance. It also applies to third-party advertisers running paid campaigns that direct users to TikTok or other ByteDance-owned properties in the affected countries.
This means that creators, businesses, and marketing agencies running TikTok-linked campaigns on Facebook or Instagram could also face restrictions, even if they are not directly associated with ByteDance.
Meta explained its position in a statement reported by Reuters.
"We don't have to run ads from a competitor whose goal is to pull people off our apps," Meta said.
Meta further explained that refusing promotional services to a competing business was a normal commercial practice, adding that it would continue competing through its products and user experience.
Meta And TikTok's Rivalry Extends Beyond Advertising
The decision highlights the growing rivalry between Meta and ByteDance, particularly as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok compete for user engagement, creators, and advertising budgets.
According to Reuters and Channel News Asia (CNA), TikTok has emerged as one of Meta's strongest competitors in the social media industry.
Interestingly, the advertising restriction follows changes to how TikTok handles links to competing platforms.
TikTok's website states that it does not support links that directly open or log users into other social media apps. However, users can still add website links directing visitors to those services.
The rivalry extends into online safety as well.
Reuters reported that Meta has been urging TikTok and YouTube to adopt comparable teen-safety protections following its August settlement with US states over social media harms involving children.
As part of that agreement, Meta committed to measures including daily usage limits, nighttime restrictions, and stronger safeguards against age-restricted content for younger users.
Meanwhile, TikTok reached a separate settlement with Alabama in September, agreeing to strengthen usage limits and age-verification measures.
However, Meta's stated justification for its latest advertising ban focuses on competition rather than child-safety enforcement.
What Does Meta's TikTok Ad Ban Mean For Advertisers?
The decision could have implications beyond ByteDance, particularly for brands, creators, and advertisers that use Facebook and Instagram to promote their presence on TikTok.
Since Meta's restriction also covers third-party campaigns linking to ByteDance properties, advertisers operating in the seven affected countries may need to review their campaign destinations.
For example, paid campaigns designed to drive users directly to a TikTok profile or other ByteDance service could fall within the restriction.
However, the announcement does not establish a broader ban on ordinary social media posts mentioning TikTok or prevent users from accessing TikTok itself.
There is also a commercial trade-off for Meta.
As INDmoney noted in its analysis, refusing TikTok-related advertisements means Meta may be giving up advertising revenue from a paying competitor.

Yet the strategic calculation is different when the advertiser is a direct rival competing for the same audience.
Allowing TikTok to advertise on Facebook and Instagram could generate immediate revenue for Meta while also helping TikTok attract users who might otherwise spend more time on Meta's platforms.
The restriction therefore reflects a decision to protect user attention and engagement rather than simply accept advertising revenue from every eligible business.
However, neither Meta nor the reviewed reporting has disclosed how much advertising revenue the company could lose because of the restrictions.
What Happens Next For Meta And TikTok?
According to Reuters, TikTok and ByteDance had not immediately responded to requests for comment following Meta's decision.
It remains unclear whether TikTok will introduce retaliatory advertising restrictions or whether Meta will expand the policy beyond the seven announced countries.
The companies have also not disclosed how many third-party advertisers or active campaigns will be affected.
For now, Meta's decision adds another dimension to its competition with TikTok, shifting the rivalry beyond short-form video content and creator engagement into how competing platforms can advertise to one another's users.
