Overall Rating

At Made by Google 2026, the company's signature product launch event, Google unveiled a new smartwatch that gently wakes you during lighter sleep can now also escalate to emergency services if you stop breathing.

This contrast sits at the heart of Google’s Pixel Watch 5, which combines Gemini assistance with deeper fitness tracking and Health Guardian features designed to catch subtle changes before they become bigger problems.

TL;DR

  • Google Pixel Watch 5 starts at $399 for the 41mm model and $429 for the 45mm model, with pre-orders from August 12 and store availability from August 20.
  • New features include proactive Gemini suggestions, more accurate GPS route tracking, guided strength training, smarter sleep tools and Health Guardian trend summaries.
  • Breathing emergency detection can automatically contact emergency services if an unresponsive wearer experiences a severe, persistent oxygen drop.

Pixel Watch 5 Brings Faster Hardware, Longer Battery Life And More Personalization

Pixel Watch 5 features a 3,000-nit domed Actua 360 Display, 11 new glanceable complication styles, two new watch faces and generative watch faces. Google is also adding Fog, Canyon and Olive colors, with Canyon limited to the 41mm model.

Battery life reaches up to 30 hours on the 41mm model and 40 hours on the 45mm model, with fast charging. The Qualcomm Snapdragon W5 Gen 2 Accelerated processor and dual-chip architecture bring 50% more RAM, a 12% CPU boost and, according to Google, 20% faster overall performance.

Pre-orders begin August 12, with store availability from August 20. Pricing starts at $399 for the 41mm model and $429 for the 45mm version, while a $579 Stephen Curry Special Edition in 45mm reaches stores September 3.

Pixel Watch 5 Enables Proactive Gemini Help Without Reaching For Your Phone

At a Glance can surface context-aware information directly on the watch face, such as a boarding pass at the airport or remaining stops during a commute.

Raise to Talk lets users lift their wrist and ask Gemini to start a workout, set a timer or pull dinner reservations from Gmail. Core actions can run on-device with low latency even when the watch is offline.

Gemini Intelligence Proactive Suggestions can turn multi-step tasks into one-tap actions. If someone asks when a family dinner is scheduled, Gemini can find the event in the calendar and surface the answer on the wrist, while a double-pinch gesture can select, confirm and send.

Pixel Watch 5 Improves GPS Accuracy For Runs, Hikes And Bike Rides

Pixel Watch 5 delivers twice the GPS route accuracy of previous generations in difficult environments and claims it can outperform Apple Watch Ultra 3 and Garmin Fenix 8 Pro in route tracking.

The system uses 3D building models from Google Maps to account for signals bouncing off buildings, AI-driven corrections and a global network of GPS reference stations that adjust for atmospheric conditions and satellite errors in real time.

Google also compresses raw GPS data, sends it to a server for processing and correction, then delivers the refined route to the Google Health app back end. The company says this does not negatively affect battery life.

Pixel Watch 5 Adds Guided Strength Training, Recovery Coaching And Better Sleep Tracking

An upcoming on-wrist Strength Training experience will guide users through sets and rest periods while letting them log weights and repetitions.

Google Health Coach can create customized strength workouts around a user’s goals, while users can also build their own routines in the Google Health app. The coach can interpret recovery signals such as sleep and heart rate variability, then adapt recommendations when conditions make a hard workout less suitable.

Sleep tracking includes 15% more accurate sleep stage detection, bedtime automations that can pause audiobooks after the wearer falls asleep and a dedicated bedtime watch face. Smart Wake monitors heart rate and movement during the 30 minutes before an alarm, then looks for a lighter sleep period to wake the wearer.

Pixel Watch 5 Can Escalate Breathing Emergencies When A Wearer Is Unresponsive

The most consequential addition is breathing emergency detection.

The opt-in feature uses heart rate, motion and altitude signals with an AI-based algorithm to look for severe, persistent oxygen drops linked to severe pneumonia, accidental drug overdose or choking.

To reduce false alarms, the system checks for low movement, rapid altitude changes and whether the wearer has been asleep for more than 30 minutes. If it suspects an emergency, the watch starts with a strong haptic alert and full-screen notification, followed by an audible warning and a 30-second countdown.

If there is still no response, the connected phone or LTE-enabled watch can call emergency services. An automated message tells the operator the wearer is unresponsive and shares the precise location, while configured emergency contacts can also be notified.

The feature is available on Pixel Watch 4 and 5 in Austria, Denmark, France, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland and the U.K., with Google planning wider availability.

Health Guardian Helps Pixel Watch And Fitbit Air Track Longer-Term Health Changes

Google’s Health Guardian suite is designed to surface quieter physiological changes through monthly summaries in the Google Health app.

Coming soon to qualified Pixel Watches and Fitbit Air, it includes insulin resistance trends, blood pressure trends and sleep breathing quality trends, with Google Health Coach helping users interpret the data.

Insulin resistance trends analyze multi-week physiological data without requiring blood, while blood pressure trends estimate persistent shifts using pulse and motion patterns without a cuff or manual calibration. Sleep breathing quality trends show how much of each night was spent in optimal breathing and build those observations into a monthly assessment.

Google says these capabilities are powered by Health Foundation Models trained on opted-in sensor data and validated against clinical measurements. With Pixel Watch 5, the company is pushing that research into a wearable designed not only to record what happened, but to recognize what might need attention next.
