Google Assistant Removal Starts September 4 As Gemini Takes Over Android And Wear OS

Google has reportedly started informing users that it will begin removing access to Google Assistant on September 4, 2026.

According to an email reported by 9to5Google, the removal will be gradual rather than an immediate shutdown affecting every device on the same day.

“We will begin removing access to Google Assistant starting on 4 September,” Google reportedly said in the email.

The company expects the process to take several weeks. Once Assistant is removed from an affected device, users will no longer be able to use it or switch back from Gemini.

 

Which Devices Will Lose Google Assistant?

 

The change covers Android phones and tablets, along with paired devices such as Wear OS smartwatches, headphones and earbuds.

Cars using Android Auto through a connected phone will also be affected. However, vehicles equipped with Google built-in will continue to support Assistant for now, according to The Verge’s report.

The September timeline does not appear to apply to Google Home speakers, smart displays or Google TV devices.

Google has been developing a separate Gemini for Home experience for compatible speakers and displays, meaning the transition on home devices is following a different rollout.

Gemini Will Become The Default Mobile Assistant

 

Google first publicly outlined its plan to replace Assistant with Gemini in March 2025.

In its official transition announcement, Google said it would upgrade mobile users before expanding Gemini to tablets, cars, headphones and watches.

“We’ve reimagined the experience with AI at its core to make Gemini your personal, AI-powered assistant,” said Brian Marquardt, Senior Director of Product Management for the Gemini app.

Google later delayed the broader transition into 2026 as it continued improving Gemini’s support for everyday Assistant functions. These include playing music, setting timers and completing actions from a locked screen.

Gemini also offers features that were not available through the classic Assistant, including Gemini Live conversations, image-based queries and connections with services such as Gmail, Calendar, Google Maps and YouTube.

 

Can Every Android Device Use Gemini?

 

Google’s current Gemini availability guidance says the mobile app supports Android phones and tablets running Android 9 or later with at least 2GB of RAM.

Android Go devices do not support the standard Gemini mobile app. Availability can also vary according to a user’s country, language, account type and device.

Eligible users can switch to Gemini through the Google app or their device’s digital assistant settings. Once enabled, Gemini can respond to the “Hey Google” command and the same touch shortcuts previously used to open Assistant.

Google has not publicly detailed how every unsupported or ineligible device will be handled under the newly reported September rollout.
