Children Are Outsmarting AI Age Verification Systems

 

As governments and technology companies intensify efforts to protect children online, a growing number of minors are reportedly finding creative ways to bypass AI-powered age-verification systems, including one method involving fake mustaches drawn with eyebrow pencils.

The issue gained widespread attention after a new report from UK-based nonprofit Internet Matters revealed that children are successfully circumventing online age checks despite stricter regulations introduced under the UK’s Online Safety Act.

The report surveyed nearly 1,300 children aged 9 to 16 and their parents, finding that 46% of children believe age checks are easy to bypass, while 32% admitted they had already done so.

Among the methods used were fake birth dates, borrowed accounts, AI-generated imagery, video game character tricks, and cosmetic alterations such as drawn-on facial hair.

One parent told researchers that her 12-year-old son used an eyebrow pencil to draw a fake mustache on his face, successfully convincing an automated verification system that he was 15 years old.


Meta And Platforms Push AI-Powered Age Checks

 

The findings arrive as social media giants and governments increasingly turn toward artificial intelligence-based age estimation technologies to comply with child safety regulations.

Meta recently announced expanded deployment of AI-powered age-verification tools across Instagram and Facebook.

The company said its systems analyze visual cues such as facial structure, height, and behavioral signals alongside posts, comments, and account activity to estimate whether users are underage.

“If we suspect that an account is managed by a child under 13, it will be suspended,” Meta explained in its announcement, adding that users would need to revalidate their age before regaining access.

Meta also said it would automatically shift suspected users aged 13 to 15 into Teen Accounts that come with built-in restrictions and parental controls enabled by default.

Several governments, including the UK and Australia, are now considering stricter online child safety laws that may require mandatory age-assurance systems for social media platforms and app stores.


Researchers Warn AI Age Detection Is Easy To Manipulate

 

However, researchers and privacy advocates argue that current AI-powered verification systems remain unreliable and vulnerable to manipulation.

A recent academic paper titled “Can a Teenager Fool an AI? Evaluating Low-Cost Cosmetic Attacks on Age Estimation Systems” found that simple cosmetic changes such as fake beards, makeup, wrinkles, and grey hair could fool AI age-detection systems between 28% and 83% of the time depending on the model used.

Another research paper, “The Folly of AI for Age Verification,” argued that AI-based age checks may remain fundamentally flawed due to spoofing risks, algorithmic bias, and computer vision limitations.

Privacy advocates are also raising concerns about biometric data collection tied to online verification systems.

Some platforms now require users to upload government-issued IDs or facial scans to prove their age, sparking fears surrounding surveillance, identity theft, and data breaches.

Last year, reports emerged that thousands of ID photos linked to a Discord age-verification vendor may have been exposed during a breach.

Governments Continue Tightening Online Safety Regulations

 

Despite the criticism, governments worldwide continue increasing pressure on platforms to strengthen child safety protections online.

The European Commission recently ruled that Meta may have failed to adequately prevent children under 13 from accessing its platforms under the EU’s Digital Services Act.

Meanwhile, regulators continue debating how platforms should balance child protection, user privacy, and accessibility without introducing invasive surveillance systems.

For now, however, the battle between online safety technologies and increasingly tech-savvy teenagers appears far from over.
