Hiroki Tomiyasu, a farmer in Hokkaido, Japan, is using ChatGPT and OpenAI Codex to help run his 100-hectare farm, where he grows broccoli, pumpkins, green onions, and soybeans. Despite having no background in farming or engineering, Tomiyasu has built several custom tools to support his operations.


Before entering agriculture, Tomiyasu worked as a public servant. After joining efforts to restore abandoned farmland, he learned farming on the job and began looking for ways to manage the demands of large-scale operations without investing in costly technology.

Using AI, he developed an automated greenhouse vent system, a satellite-based crop monitoring platform, and an integrated farm management system that connects work schedules, records, materials, and sensor data. AI also helps him analyze satellite imagery, monitor crop conditions, identify plant diseases, and make faster decisions.

Codex assisted him in building a greenhouse control system that can raise and lower vents through text commands. He also created a bot for his farm group chat to help coordinate daily activities and improve communication.
