Google Makes Chrome An AI Browser By Adding Gemini & Reveals 10 Major Updates
Updated on Mon, Sep 22, 2025
The ruling came after months of heavy speculation that the company would be forced to drop these and more prized products—thankfully, for the company, such a day won’t come to pass. At least for now.
The confirmation that it will get to keep Chrome also meant that Google could roll out a series of key AI-powered updates within the world’s leading browser that boasts a 69% market share globally (according to Statclounter).
Through a blog post published on its website, Google listed out 10 new AI features powered by Gemini, in a move that’s been described as “the biggest upgrade to Chrome in its history.”
The idea is to enhance user experiences by allowing it to better anticipate a user’s needs, help them understand more complex information, and make them more productive when browsing the web, as well as keep them safe.
-
Gemini In Chrome: Google has rolled out Gemini in Chrome for Mac and Windows desktop users in the U.S., allowing them to ask Gemini to clarify complex information on any webpage. Access for businesses will come soon via Google Workspace. Google will also bring Gemini in Chrome to mobile in the U.S. soon. Users can activate Gemini when using Chrome on Android, while the iOS version of Gemini in Chrome will soon be built into the app.
-
Agentic Browsing Agent: Google will be introducing agentic capabilities to Gemini in Chrome in the coming months, allowing users to automate tedious tasks that take up time. Users can stop the service whenever they want.
-
Multi-Tab Of Madness: Gemini in Chrome can work across multiple tabs, allowing users to quickly compare, consolidate, and summarize information across multiple websites.
-
Historical Webpages: Gemini in Chrome can be used to recall important websites users previously visited without having to sift through their history. Users type out simple prompts describing what the webpage was about.
-
Google Apps: Google has built a deeper integration between Gemini in Chrome and apps such as Calendar, YouTube and Maps, which lets users complete tasks such as schedule meetings, find a specific spot in a YouTube video, see location details, and more without leaving the page they’re on.
-
Omnibox AI Mode Search: Later this month, Google is bringing users quick access to Search’s AI Mode through the omnibox (Chrome’s address bar), meaning that they can directly ask longer, more complex questions and get a helpful AI response with follow-ups and dive deeper on the web.
-
Current Page Questions: The omnibox can also be used to ask questions about the entire page a user is on, while Chrome can suggest relevant questions based on the page’s context. It will come with an AI Overview from Search alongside the page, with the ability to ask follow-up questions in AI Mode. Contextual suggestions are available in the U.S. in English and will expand to more countries and languages soon.
-
Gemini Nano’s Scam Combat: Gemini Nano is already being used by Safe Browsing’s Enhanced Protection mode to help identify tech support scams that trick users into downloading harmful software, and this will soon be expanded to thwart fake viruses or fake giveaways.
-
Bad Notifications And Permissions: Using AI, Chrome can detect “potentially spammy or scammy notifications,” and offers users the option to see them or not. This has helped cut unwanted website notifications for Chrome on Android by around 3 billion each day. Furthermore, AI will now be used to learn user preferences—along with signals such as site quality—to adjust how and when it presents permissions requests.
-
1-Step Password Change: Chrome will soon allow users to change saved passwords with a single click on supported sites, such as Coursera, Spotify, Duolingo, H&M and more.
Ahead of this, Chrome is also reported to get an update for its Read Aloud feature, which, instead of reading out the text on a webpage, the browser will use AI to generate an Audio Overview—similar to that of NotebookLM—that matches the playback style of podcasts, i.e., a conversation between two hosts.
“The point is to turn any article or boring block of text into a quick, interactive listening experience,” reads the report.
Google's Ups And Downs
Google's favorable ruling, along with key announcements such as additional investments of $9 billion in Oklahoma, $9 billion in Virginia, and £5 billion ($6.8 billion) in the United Kingdom, as well as signing a six-year deal with Meta worth $10 billion, led to Alphabet’s (Google’s parent company) market capitalization going past $3 trillion for the first time.
It hit this milestone (and remains at $3.08 trillion at the time of writing), despite several hiccups along the way, especially regulatory backfire.
This includes getting fined $425 million in the U.S., a $381 million (€325 million) fine in France, and the mammoth $3.45 billion (€2.95 billion) fine in a historic EU ruling for anticompetitive practices. Additionally, Google found itself being sued by Penske Media—the owner of Rolling Stone, Billboard, and Variety.
Even its favorable ruling came with downsides—Google can’t enter or maintain any exclusive contracts for its products, and it would have to share Search data and user interaction with competitors.
Despite these inconveniences, Google drives on, as it looks to retain its leading position in the browser market and capture a strong position in the AI sector.
What do you think about Google Chrome’s new AI upgrades? Which feature are you looking forward to trying out?
