Google Launches Dreambeans AI App In India Despite 84% Drop In US Downloads
Updated on Tue, Nov 3, 2026
Google is bringing its experimental Dreambeans AI app to India, its first market outside the United States, despite a sharp decline in downloads back home. The app turns information from connected Google services into personalized daily stories, without requiring users to enter prompts.
The launch also introduces support for 14 languages, AI-generated animations, and controls over which personal information the app can access.
TL;DR
- Google has launched Dreambeans in India for Android and iOS users aged 18 and above, supporting 14 languages.
- The app transforms information from connected Google services into personalized visual stories using AI.
- US downloads reportedly dropped 84% month over month in October.
- Users can control connected services, delete data, and restrict certain story topics.
Google Dreambeans Launches In India Amid Declining US Downloads
Google's latest AI experiment is expanding internationally, but its early adoption numbers suggest the company still has work to do.
According to market intelligence estimates reported by TechCrunch, Dreambeans recorded nearly 55,000 downloads in the US since its June debut. Around 63% occurred in September, after Google opened access to eligible adults, before monthly downloads fell 84% to approximately 5,500 in October.
During its first 30 days of broader US availability, Dreambeans generated an estimated 29,000 downloads, considerably fewer than several general-purpose AI applications during their respective launch periods.
However, Dreambeans serves a different purpose.
Rather than operating as another chatbot, it proactively creates personalized content based on users' digital activities. Google selected India as its first international destination, citing interest from Indian users and widespread adoption of its interconnected services.
The move also follows Google's broader push toward personalized AI experiences, including Gemini Spark's expansion into India.
Google Dreambeans Uses Gmail, Photos And Gemini To Generate AI Stories
Dreambeans draws information from services users choose to connect, including Gmail, Google Calendar, Google Photos, Google Search, Gemini, and YouTube.
Using this information, the app generates fresh collections of illustrated stories around personal interests, activities, upcoming events, and everyday plans.
These could include travel suggestions, creative projects, nearby events, and useful reminders.
Users can explore individual stories, bookmark recommendations, share content, and provide feedback to improve future suggestions.
Unlike Google's AI Mode Connected Apps experience, Dreambeans does not require users to initiate a search or specify a task.
The app also uses Google's Veo video-generation model to animate images in selected stories, adding motion to otherwise static illustrations.
Google Dreambeans Supports 14 Languages On Android And iOS
The India rollout brings Dreambeans to eligible users aged 18 and above through the Google Play Store and Apple's App Store.
Supported languages include English, Hindi, Bengali, Telugu, Marathi, Tamil, Urdu, Gujarati, Kannada, Malayalam, Odia, Punjabi, Assamese, and Nepali.
However, there's a catch.
Although Dreambeans can process information from connected services in multiple languages, it generates stories in only one selected language at a time.
This means users cannot currently create stories combining languages, including commonly mixed Hindi-English conversations.
The app remains part of Google Labs, and Google has not announced additional international markets.

Google Dreambeans Offers Privacy Controls For Personalized AI Stories
Personalization also means granting an AI application access to potentially sensitive information.
Google says users can select which services Dreambeans accesses, disconnect them whenever necessary, and delete information stored within the app.
Users can also request that specific topics, including work-related details or potentially upsetting memories, be excluded from generated stories.
According to Google product manager Gozde Oznur's briefing, Dreambeans is limited to personal Google accounts, with generated stories visible only to the account holder.
Google is also exploring ways to make Dreambeans more actionable, allowing users to do more with recommendations rather than simply browse them.
For now, the India launch will test whether personalized AI storytelling can attract users beyond the app's modest initial US audience.
