Google Gemini Gems Will Become Skills Starting November 17

Google introduced Gems in 2024 to let Gemini users create custom AI assistants for recurring tasks without repeatedly entering the same instructions.

The feature could be configured for specific purposes, while Google also offered premade options such as learning coaches, brainstorming assistants, career guides, coding partners, and editors. Users could build their own Gems for tasks such as vacation planning and share their custom assistants with other people.

Now, those individual AI assistants are heading for retirement.

According to information being shown inside the Gemini app, Google will begin converting Gems into Skills on November 17. Users will not need to manually rebuild their existing Gems because Google plans to migrate them automatically, while Gems themselves will continue working until the change takes effect.
 

 

Google Gemini Skills Replace Gems With Reusable AI Instructions

The switch changes the packaging rather than simply erasing what users created. Instead of maintaining Gems as separately branded custom assistants, Google is turning their underlying instructions into Skills that can be reused across different AI tasks.
