Elon Musk's Starbase City To Establish Its Own Police Department
Updated on Thu, Feb 5, 2026
Described as the "Gateway to Mars", Starbase is "located on the southern tip of Texas," and is "the newest city in the Rio Grande Valley," as per the company's website.
"Starbase is a launch site unlike any place on Earth, with humanity’s future in space unfolding in plain view for the public."
Initally formed in the late 1960s, the town of Starbase was formally incorporated on May 20, 2025. Prior to this, SpaceX purchased many properties in the village from 2018. In March 2021, Musk announced plans to incorporate a new city in the area.
As the city expands and becomes the center of crucial space missions, it is now setting up its own municipal police department. This move highlights the growth of Starbase, a city that's quickly becoming a pivotal location in the aerospace industry.
TL;DR
- Starbase, the SpaceX company town, is creating its own municipal police department.
- The initiative follows a city commission vote and is awaiting approval from the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement (TCOLE).
- SpaceX’s operations in Starbase, including the Starship rocket prototype testing, necessitate increased security.
In a recent decision, the Starbase city commission approved the creation of a municipal police department, a move that will enhance public safety as the city continues to grow.
The police department will be led by a chief of police appointed by the city commission, with plans to hire at least eight officers. This department will play a vital role in safeguarding the valuable assets and operations of SpaceX, including the development and testing of the Starship rocket.
Kent Myers, Starbase’s city administrator, emphasized the importance of the police force, stating, 'There are a lot of assets here with the operations of SpaceX, and those assets need to be protected.' Starbase has been evolving since it was incorporated as a city last year, and security is now a priority as the city continues to expand its infrastructure and workforce.
Initially, Starbase relied on a contract with the Cameron County Sheriff’s Office, which included a $3.5 million, five-year agreement for sheriff deputies to patrol the city.
However, this contract did not meet expectations, and the city has now decided to move forward with its own police force. The decision to transition to an independent department was fueled by the failure to find suitable deputies under the county contract.
The move is part of a broader trend of local growth and self-sufficiency in Starbase. In addition to the police department, Starbase established a volunteer fire department last October, alongside other essential public services.
Once the new police department is approved by TCOLE, it will join a growing list of essential services that support the expanding needs of Starbase's resident population, which is primarily made up of SpaceX employees and their families.
With SpaceX continuing to lead space innovation at Starbase, the establishment of a dedicated police department represents a crucial step toward ensuring the city’s security and continued progress.
SpaceX’s Impact On The Region
Starbase, located at the southern tip of Texas, has become an integral part of SpaceX’s operations. This city is home to the assembly and testing facilities for the Starship rocket, which SpaceX envisions as the vehicle to carry humans to Mars.
The development of such groundbreaking technology requires a high level of operational security, making the formation of a dedicated police force a necessary step in maintaining the safety and integrity of the site.

What’s Next For Starbase And SpaceX
Starbase’s evolution from a small, remote settlement into a self-sustaining company town is just the beginning. With its new police department set to launch in the coming months, SpaceX is reaffirming its commitment to long-term growth in the region.
As Starbase prepares to expand its footprint further, we can expect even more changes aimed at supporting the operational needs of SpaceX and its growing workforce.
In the near future, Starbase may continue to see the rollout of additional public services, ensuring it remains a secure and thriving hub for one of the most ambitious space companies on Earth.
The continued development of Starbase is expected to contribute significantly to the local economy and become an even more integral part of the global aerospace industry.
As SpaceX works towards its goal of Mars colonization, Starbase is positioning itself as the foundation for humanity’s future in space.
