How much AI is too much?

We bet that question has probably crossed your mind every time a new AI feature, tool, or automation lands in your workspace. Sure, AI boosts efficiency by helping in creating reports, managing payroll, or even predicting business needs. However, it’s also quietly rewriting the rules of how companies operate.

From who gets hired to how paychecks are processed, the balance between human judgment and machine precision is getting blurrier by the day, especially for human resource professionals. Now, that balance has taken center stage in the corporate world.

On October 16, while the global payroll startup Deel announced it had closed a $300 million Series E round, pushing its valuation to $17.3 billion, Amazon prepared to cut up to 15% in its HR division, as the e-commerce giant doubles down on AI investments.

So, why is this happening, and how will it impact HR teams? Let’s take a deeper look!

What Did Deel Announce?

Deel has announced a new Series E funding round, led by Ribbit Capital, with participation from returning backers Andreessen Horowitz, Coatue Management, General Catalyst, and others. The HR tech company’s leadership frames this investment as a vote of confidence in its vision to scale borderless payroll.

It further reported that September 2025 marked the first month it exceeded $100 million in revenue, and that it has been profitable for three straight years. Earlier in 2025, Deel crossed the $1 billion annual recurring revenue (ARR) threshold.

Today, Deel serves over 37,000 companies and handles payroll for more than 1.5 million workers across 150+ countries, processing about $22 billion in payroll annually.

The infused capital will be deployed to accelerate strategic acquisitions, deepen its infrastructure, expand support for AI automation across its HR and payroll suite, and extend native payroll coverage to over 100 countries by 2029.

Deel’s growth is not confined to a single domain: in 2025, the company saw significant expansion across U.S. payroll, global payroll, HR tools, and immigration/IT products.

Despite its momentum, Deel is entangled in litigation with rival Rippling, which accuses Deel of racketeering, trade secret theft and other misconduct. Deel denies the allegations and has filed counterclaims, characterizing the suit as a “smear campaign.”

In response to the legal backdrop, CEO Alex Bouaziz declined to comment on the lawsuit in detail during the funding announcement but stressed the importance of maintaining its focus on growth and innovation.

While Deel is scaling its global footprint through capital and innovation, another tech giant is taking a very different route to streamline HR operations and prepare for the AI era.

What’s Driving Amazon’s HR Layoffs?

According to Fortune and several other outlets, Amazon is preparing to cut up to 15% of roles within its human resources and People Experience & Technology (PXT) division, with the cuts also extending to its consumer business units.

Amazon’s HR arm reportedly employs over 10,000 people globally, across recruiting, HR tech, and related functions. The company has not confirmed the total number of layoffs or its exact timing.

These layoffs come as Amazon invests heavily in AI and cloud infrastructure, with its 2025 capital expenditures expected to exceed $100 billion, driven by its data center business.

Notably, these planned reductions add to earlier rounds of layoffs in 2025 across Amazon’s devices business, the podcast division (Wondery), and portions of AWS.

In June, CEO Andy Jassy warned employees that as Amazon adopts AI more extensively, it expects its corporate workforce to shrink, arguing that those conversant with AI will be better positioned in the evolving organization.

Together, these contrasting moves highlight a shifting reality—where organizational growth and HR efficiency are being redefined through the lens of automation, data, and AI-driven decision-making.

What Does It Mean For The Future Of Work?

Deel’s move is striking in several ways: it demonstrates VC appetite for infrastructure plays in HR and payroll even amid legal skirmishes. The company’s metrics—with profitability over $1B ARR and growth across sectors—are evidently compelling enough to overshadow its litigation risks.

If Deel succeeds in building out native payroll coverage in 100+ countries, it will become a foundational player in the global HR arena. Conversely, Amazon’s reported layoff push reflects a broader tension among tech giants: balancing aggressive AI investment with human-driven support functions.

So, with all this going on, do you think Deel’s infrastructure-first, full-stack bet will allow it to leap ahead of rivals? Will Amazon’s HR cuts lead to higher ROI on AI investments or pushback from workers and regulators?
