Overall Rating
AI is changing the way we watch and create content, faster than most of us realize. AI creating lifelike videos of real people seemed impossible but is now a reality. That reality is raising questions about creativity and ownership.

TL;DR

  • ByteDance puts Seedance 2.0 global launch on hold over copyright worries.
  • AI clips showing Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt drew criticism from the industry.
  • Company is working on stronger safeguards before releasing it worldwide.

One of the latest examples is ByteDance’s Seedance 2.0. Launched in China in February, the AI video generator quickly went viral. Among the clips that caught attention was one featuring popular actors like Tom Cruise fighting Brad Pitt, which faced criticism for using actors’ likeness without permission.

The clip quickly circulated online, sparking conversations about the limits of AI-generated content and how far technology can go in recreating real people. Industry insiders pointed out that while the technology is impressive, it also raises serious ethical and legal questions, especially when it involves recognizable actors and copyrighted material.

Hollywood reacted quickly. Filmmakers and studios voiced concerns that tools like this could threaten creative work and intellectual property. Major studios, including The Walt Disney Company, sent cease-and-desist letters accusing ByteDance of using their IP without authorization. As one screenwriter said, “It’s likely over for us,” highlighting the unease across the industry.

Originally, ByteDance had planned a global rollout of Seedance 2.0 in mid-March. The company has now paused the international launch while engineers and legal teams work on stronger safeguards to prevent copyright issues and protect intellectual property.

Seedance 2.0 is a clear example of AI’s potential and the responsibility that comes with it. While the technology can create lifelike content, companies need to balance innovation with legal and ethical considerations.
