Amazon Introduces Three New Android Tablets With Alexa+ Built In
According to Amazon, the new Alexa Tablet lineup combines upgraded hardware, personalized AI experiences, and access to millions of applications through the Google Play Store.
Unlike Amazon's existing Fire tablets, which use Fire OS and Amazon's own app marketplace, the new devices run Android and support popular applications including YouTube, Netflix, Gmail, and Google Docs.
TechCrunch reported that an Amazon spokesperson confirmed the new tablets are an entirely new product line, featuring different hardware and a new operating system, rather than rebranded Fire tablets.
The devices also come with Amazon applications such as Prime Video, Kindle, Audible, Amazon Music, Amazon Quick, and Amazon Luna.
All three models feature aluminum unibody construction, upgraded processors, and high-resolution displays, with different configurations targeting productivity, entertainment, and portability.
Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro, Tablet 11 And Tablet 8: Features And Specifications
The Amazon Alexa Tablet 12 Pro is the company's flagship model, featuring a 12-inch display with a 120Hz refresh rate, 280 pixels per inch, and a 3:2 aspect ratio.
Powered by a 4nm octa-core processor with up to 16GB of RAM, the tablet delivers nearly three times faster processing and nine times faster graphics performance than any previously shipped Amazon tablet, according to the company.
The device also features quad Dolby Atmos speakers, Wi-Fi 6E, up to 16 hours of video playback, and a 6.5mm-thin design.
Amazon is offering an optional Nanomatte display, developed using a precision-etching process in collaboration with Corning, which is designed to reduce glare while preserving image clarity.
For productivity, the company introduced the Alexa Tablet Pro Pen, featuring 4,096 pressure sensitivity levels, and a magnetic Pro Keyboard that supports multitasking without requiring Bluetooth pairing.
Meanwhile, the Alexa Tablet 11 features an 11-inch 2.5K display, 90Hz refresh rate, 8GB RAM, dual Dolby Atmos speakers, and up to 15 hours of video playback.
The smaller Alexa Tablet 8 comes with an 8.7-inch display, an octa-core processor, Wi-Fi 6, and up to 14 hours of video playback. Weighing 329 grams, it is designed for portable entertainment and reading.
Alexa+ Brings AI Assistance, Screen Awareness And Hands-Free Conversations
Beyond the hardware upgrades, Amazon is integrating Alexa+ into the core tablet experience.
Users can activate the assistant through voice commands or the Ask Alexa button to ask questions, manage smart home devices, and receive personalized recommendations without switching applications.
Topics for more insights:
One of the key additions is On-Screen Intelligence, which allows Alexa+ to interpret information displayed on the screen and provide contextual assistance.
For instance, users browsing hiking trails can ask Alexa+ to compare options, while those viewing event schedules can request that dates be added to their calendars.
The feature can also help users identify products, summarize information, and complete tasks based on what they are viewing.
Amazon says On-Screen Intelligence is disabled by default and requires users to opt in. A visual indicator appears when Alexa can access the screen, and users can turn the feature off through Settings.
The company has also introduced continuous hands-free conversations, allowing users to interact with Alexa+ without repeating the wake word between questions.
Kevin Keith, Vice President, Devices at Amazon, said in the company's announcement, "We're really proud of this new lineup, and this is just the start."
Amazon Adds Kindle Reading Features And New Kids Tablets
Amazon is also bringing a dedicated Kindle reading experience to its Alexa Tablet lineup.
Opening the Kindle app activates a distraction-free reading environment that silences notifications, reduces blue light, and supports up to 20 hours of reading on a single charge, according to Amazon.
Users can choose between different reading themes, including warmer tones and grayscale, while the flagship model supports handwritten annotations using the Pro Pen.
The company has also introduced new Amazon Kids Tablets in 8.7-inch and 11-inch sizes.
These devices come bundled with protective cases and a one-year Amazon Kids+ subscription. Additional features include Storybuilder, which allows children to create illustrated stories using voice commands, and an updated Parent Dashboard.
With the new lineup, Amazon is expanding beyond its traditional Fire tablet ecosystem by combining Android app compatibility, Alexa+ intelligence, and upgraded productivity features.
Whether these changes can help Amazon compete more effectively in the broader Android tablet market remains to be seen.
