What Is Windows Update (WU)?
Windows Update is a great thing. It's like a fabulous friend who goes out and does something for you instead of just sitting around and doing nothing all day. Like… updates your computer! It's like a handyman. No, it's more like a personal assistant. It will keep your computer up to date without you having to lift a finger—or even know that it's happening! It doesn't stop there: Windows Update can also help you troubleshoot problems with your computer by providing information about programs or drivers that may be causing trouble. The Windows Update feature in the Control Panel of the Windows operating system is designed to keep your PC up-to-date by automatically downloading and installing all the latest drivers, patches and security fixes. You can configure Windows Update to check for updates once a week, or you can choose to have it check for updates automatically every day. If you'd like to install an optional update, you can configure it as "checked"; you will be notified when an update becomes available for your PC. If you select to install recommended updates automatically, all other updates will be installed simultaneously. However, if you choose to install essential updates manually, only those updates will be installed until they are selected again or until they become available as recommended or required; again, only then would all other updates be installed at once. There are three classifications of updates: Optional (driver and enhancement), Recommended (security fixes and critical issues), and Important (essential fixes of security). When updating through Windows Update, these classifications are used to determine which types of updates are downloaded first based on their importance level. However, no way currently built into Windows Update allows users to specify which update type (s) should be installed first.
