What Is Audio Messaging Interchange Specification (AMIS)?
You've got to hand it to the AMIS folks for their vision. Imagine you're on vacation in Shanghai, and your friend is trying to leave you a voicemail. There's a problem: Their phone doesn't understand your message. What do you do? It's like a miracle! Thanks to this new protocol, you can now send your voicemails from one phone to another. Imagine that: Your friend is on vacation in Shanghai, and you want to send them a message about how great their trip looks on Instagram. This is before AMIS, so what do you do? You can't just call them up and leave a voicemail because there's no way for their phone to understand your message. You could try emailing it (if they had an email address), but that would be ridiculous! Nowadays, with AMIS in place, all it takes is sending them a text message with the text "Hey! Check out my instagram post!" Then they'll get an audio message saying, "Hey! Check out my instagram post!" voila! You've sent your friend a voicemail without having ever spoken to them directly or even being able to hear their voice. That's progress for you! Audio Messaging Interchange Specification (AMIS) is a protocol that allows you to send and receive voicemail messages from different voicemail systems. It works by routing your messages through an intermediary network, where they're converted into analog telephone calls and then delivered to your phone number in the form of an analog phone call. This allows you to access your messages using any phone on any system so long as it supports AMIS. As AMIS messages are sent over analog telephone networks, you don't need internet or email access to retrieve them. Just pick up the phone!
