“There is an emerging content type elsewhere on the internet of, basically, podcasts where people read Reddit content,” Huffman said. “I think this version of listened-to or spoken Reddit can be really engaging. So that would be almost a different format entirely.”

Reddit is now testing whether that behavior works better when it happens natively.

In other words, Reddit turns posts into short videos because the format has already found an audience outside Reddit, while the platform itself owns the conversations those videos are built around. It is less about copying TikTok and more about bringing a familiar way of consuming Reddit stories back to Reddit itself.

There is also a practical user benefit.

A format that works while people are doing something else could potentially give users another reason to return more frequently. That does not guarantee that AI-narrated videos will increase engagement, but it explains why a more passive way of consuming Reddit conversations could be valuable to the company.

There is a wider commercial question too: third-party creators have spent years turning Reddit posts into videos that generate attention on other platforms.

Bringing a similar experience inside Reddit gives the company a chance to keep more of that viewing behavior closer to the original source. It could eventually create more video attention for advertisers as well, although Reddit has not announced a new advertising product specifically tied to this experiment.

From a marketing technology perspective, that makes the test worth watching. Reddit is effectively experimenting with how one piece of community content can serve multiple consumption formats without asking users to create each version themselves.
