Reddit Challenges Australia’s Social Media Ban, As It Tests Verified Profiles

Australia’s social media ban for users under the age of 16 kicked in from December 10, as planned.

Introduced over a year ago, the bill will see social media platforms such as TikTok, Snapchat, Facebook, Instagram, Threads, X and more.

This list included renowned blogging platform Reddit, which has now filed a lawsuit in the country’s highest court to overturn the ban.

While Reddit is complying with the ruling, it says the law is an intrusion on free political discourse, has serious implications for privacy and political rights, and “has the unfortunate effect of forcing intrusive and potentially insecure verification processes on adults as well as minors.”

Furthermore, it interferes with free political communication that’s enabled through the country’s constitution, which is why Reddit is arguing that the law should be declared invalid.

“Here at Reddit, we take youth safety online seriously and believe child safety measures are crucial to a healthier internet overall,” said Reddit in a post on its website, adding, “Despite the best intentions, this law is missing the mark on actually protecting young people online. So, while we will comply with this law, we have a responsibility to share our perspective and see that it is reviewed by the courts.”

In case the ban can’t be overturned, Reddit feels it should be exempted from the list of banned platforms as its blogging platform doesn’t fall under the definition of social media. Also, it said it doesn’t “market or target advertising to children under 18.”

Meanwhile, an Australian government spokesperson said, “We will stand firm to protect young Australians from experiencing harm on social media. The matter is before the courts, so it is not appropriate to comment further.”

Reddit, which considers Australia one of its biggest markets, conveyed that the case is not an attempt to avoid compliance.

“Despite the best intentions, this law is missing the mark,” added Reddit. “There are more effective ways for the Australian government to accomplish our shared goal of protecting youth.”

This is the second legal challenge related to the law, as two Australian teens representing a libertarian group from the country are also awaiting a high court hearing.

Reddit is taking the move for transparency and accountability seriously.

The blogging platform announced a limited alpha test of verified profiles, which will begin with a small, curated group of individuals and businesses from a pool of public figures and trusted partners.

Users not selected for the trial can’t request to be verified.

The move includes placing grey checkmarks next to a username that allows individuals and businesses to confirm their identities on Reddit.

The grey checkmark, which replaces the existing “official” watermark, will be visible across profiles, communities, feeds, post detail pages, and search results, and will come with Access to Reddit Pro.

Businesses will be able to highlight content and announcements posted to their profiles, bringing trusted information to Redditors.

“This feature is designed to help redditors understand who they're engaging with in moments when verification matters, whether it’s an expert or celebrity hosting an AMA, a journalist reporting news, or a brand sharing information,” said Reddit.

To access the new features, selected users must opt in, have accounts in good standing, and actively contribute on Reddit.
