Prediction markets have quickly moved from a niche internet trend to a growing business attracting attention from major tech companies. Now, it appears Meta is exploring whether the concept can work for a much larger audience, with a social twist that could eventually evolve into something bigger.

TL;DR

  • Meta is developing its own prediction market app called Arena.
  • Users would earn points for correct predictions instead of money.
  • The move could help Meta tap into the fast-growing prediction market trend.

According to a report from The New York Times, Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg wants the company to launch its own prediction market app. Internally known as “Arena,” the project has reportedly been approved for development and is being treated as an important priority within the company.

Unlike traditional prediction market platforms such as Polymarket and Kalshi, Arena would not initially involve real money. Instead, sources said the app would function more like a game, allowing users to earn points by correctly predicting outcomes on various topics. The report notes that the current concept is “experimental but a top priority,” though real-money features could potentially be added in the future.

The app is expected to operate independently from Meta’s existing social media platforms. However, sources indicated that Meta’s social networks could help direct users toward Arena and encourage engagement with the platform.

Interest in prediction markets has surged over the past year. Platforms including Polymarket and Kalshi have recorded trading volumes worth tens of billions of dollars, attracting both users and investors. Other social media companies have also shown interest in the space, with X partnering with Polymarket last summer.

At the same time, the industry has faced increasing scrutiny. Legal controversies have emerged around prediction market trading, including a case involving a former special forces soldier accused of using insider knowledge related to an operation targeting Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro. Former U.S. Congressman George Santos is also under investigation over alleged trades on Kalshi.

Regulatory pressure has also intensified. Several states have taken legal action against prediction market operators, arguing that some activities may violate gambling laws. Adding another layer of complexity, the current U.S. administration has challenged states over those lawsuits, signaling support for the growing prediction market industry.

While Arena remains in development, Meta’s reported interest highlights how prediction markets are increasingly drawing attention from some of the biggest names in technology.
