X’s New Messaging App XChat Is Here, But Is Elon Musk’s ‘Everything App’ Dream Falling Apart?

Overall Rating
X has officially launched XChat as a standalone app for iOS, marking a major shift in how the company is expanding beyond social media. What was once pitched by Elon Musk as an “everything app” is now beginning to look more like a growing portfolio of separate apps.

The newly launched app became publicly available on Friday and allows users to message their X contacts, share files, make audio and video calls, and participate in group chats.

The rollout follows a limited beta test that began earlier this year, when X opened access to a small batch of users to collect feedback before a wider release.

TL;DR

  • X has launched standalone messaging app XChat for iOS users
  • Features include messaging, group chats, file sharing, and voice/video calls
  • X claims messages are end-to-end encrypted and PIN protected
  • Security researchers previously raised concerns over its encryption claims
  • X Communities is being shut down, pushing users toward XChat
  • X is also testing X Money, signaling a multi-app ecosystem strategy

XChat Launch Signals A Bigger Push Beyond Social Media

XChat is a critical piece of X’s broader consumer strategy as the company looks to build services beyond its core social media platform.

At launch, the app includes several privacy-focused tools such as disappearing messages, message editing, message deletion for all participants, and screenshot blocking. X also said the platform contains no ads or tracking systems.

The company further claimed that all chats are protected through end-to-end encryption and PIN security.

That claim may face scrutiny.

When X first introduced the service, security experts argued its encryption infrastructure appeared weaker than competitors such as Signal. With the standalone app now available publicly, experts will likely revisit whether those concerns have been addressed.

Despite those concerns, X appears eager to position the app as a privacy-first alternative.

In a post announcing the release, XChat’s official account wrote, “Chat with anyone on X.
Completely private. Now on your home screen.”

The post also included a direct App Store download link for iPhone users.

X Communities Shutdown Could Drive More Users To XChat

The company is also using XChat to absorb another struggling feature.

X has decided to shut down Communities due to low engagement and rising spam issues. Instead, XChat will now become the primary destination for private group conversations.

That move could help boost early downloads as existing community members migrate to the new platform.

X lead designer Benji Taylor hinted that the app is only the beginning, saying XChat is “just the beginning of what we’re building for messaging.”

X Money Tests Show X Is Building Multiple Apps, Not One Super App

The bigger surprise may be what Elon Musk originally promised.

Musk previously positioned X as an all-in-one app combining messaging, payments, shopping, creator tools, AI, and more in one ecosystem. Instead, the company now appears to be splitting those services into standalone products.

That includes X Money, which entered testing in March 2026 alongside XChat.

Its beta filled up within two hours, initially capping access at 1,000 users. In one of the platform’s more unusual promotional campaigns, Musk partnered with William Shatner to offer beta invites in exchange for $1,000 donations to the actor’s charity supporting children and veterans.

Musk later amplified the service on X by reposting Shatner’s updates and writing: “This will be big.”

Still, critics were quick to mock the growing list of apps, with one user joking that the “everything app” now requires three separate apps—X, Grok, and XChat—to use the core product.

For now, X may be expanding its reach, but whether that fragmented strategy helps or hurts Musk’s original vision remains an open question.
