As Wikipedia turns 25, the Wikimedia Foundation is marking the milestone with a mix of celebration and strategy, announcing new AI partnerships while reinforcing the value of human-driven knowledge in an increasingly automated world.

TL;DR

  • Wikimedia Foundation celebrates 25 years of Wikipedia.
  • New AI partnerships announced with Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity.
  • These firms join Google as Wikimedia Enterprise customers.
  • Wikimedia reaffirms its mission of human-powered knowledge amid the AI surge.

The foundation announced that several major AI and technology companies including Amazon, Meta, Microsoft, Mistral AI, and Perplexity have become customers of Wikimedia Enterprise, its commercial content distribution product.

While Google’s partnership was publicly announced in 2022, Wikimedia shared for the first time that these additional agreements were formed over the past year. Other partners such as Ecosia, Pleias, ProRata, Nomic, and Reef Media were also included in the announcement.

Developed by the Wikimedia Foundation, Wikimedia Enterprise allows large-scale reuse and distribution of Wikipedia content and material from other Wikimedia projects. These partnerships offer a more sustainable model at a time when AI tools and digital services increasingly rely on Wikipedia to deliver quick, factual answers.

Beyond revenue, the product is designed to provide reliable access to Wikimedia content at the volume and speed required by large technology platforms.

The foundation also highlighted Wikipedia’s global reach, noting that it remains among the top 10 most-visited websites worldwide. Users now view more than 65 million articles across over 300 languages, with nearly 15 billion page views every month.

“Wikipedia shows that knowledge is human, and knowledge needs humans. Especially now, in the age of AI, we need the human-powered knowledge of Wikipedia more than ever,” said Selena Deckelmann, Wikimedia Foundation’s CPO/CTO. “With continued help from readers, volunteer editors, donors, partners, and fans across the globe, Wikipedia will remain the crucial hub for human-powered knowledge and collaboration online for the next 25 years and beyond.”

The announcements also pointed to recent progress across the organization, including infrastructure upgrades, Wikimedia’s own approach to AI, and new experiments with formats like games and short-form video.
