WhatsApp Adds Parental Controls For Teen Accounts, But Messages Stay Private

WhatsApp is giving parents more control over teen accounts, but not over the conversations themselves. New optional tools cover group access, profile visibility, Channels, Status and Meta AI settings, while messages and calls remain protected by end-to-end encryption.

TL;DR

  • WhatsApp is introducing optional parental controls for teen accounts.
  • Parents can manage profile visibility, group access, Channels, Status and Meta AI settings.
  • A parent-set PIN is required to loosen selected restrictions, while parents can receive group activity alerts.
  • Messages and calls remain private, and parents can change or disable the controls at any time.

WhatsApp Parental Controls Put Groups, Privacy And Meta AI Behind A Parent PIN

WhatsApp says the system is designed for parents and teenagers to set up together. Parents can decide who sees a teen’s profile photo, who can add them to groups, how they use Channels, whose Status updates they can view and who can see their Status.

If a teen wants to relax a controlled setting, they need approval through a parent-set PIN. Parents can also receive alerts when a teen joins or leaves a group, while reports note notifications can appear when membership reaches 30, 100 or 250 people.

The controls extend to Meta AI. Parents can select the default 13+ experience or a stricter “Limited Content” option, which disables private-processing features including incognito chat and message summaries.

However, parents cannot access private conversations. WhatsApp says messages and calls remain end-to-end encrypted, and parents can adjust or switch off the controls whenever they choose.

“All of these controls are being designed to support open conversations about how to use WhatsApp between parents and teens, while keeping everyone's personal messages private,” the company said.

The rollout also fits Meta’s wider push to add teen-focused controls across Instagram, Facebook and Messenger. WhatsApp has separately begun testing Scam Alert, another optional safeguard designed to classify suspicious messages on-device.

WhatsApp Teen Safety Controls Arrive As Regulators Push For Stronger Child Protections

The controls arrive as governments and regulators push technology companies toward safer, more age-appropriate experiences for younger users. In the UK, the minimum age for WhatsApp is 13, although it is higher in some countries.

The UK government plans to ban under-16s from social media platforms from March 2027 and use “highly effective age assurance” to check users’ ages. WhatsApp is currently excluded because the government classifies it as a messaging service.

Still, the optional nature of WhatsApp’s controls is drawing scrutiny. Social media analyst Matt Navarra called that an “obvious weakness,” adding that the approach shifts some responsibility toward parents and teenagers.

“I think the big unanswered question is whether enough families will actually use it,” Navarra said.

WhatsApp’s model therefore gives parents more ways to guide a teen’s account without exposing private chats, but families still have to opt in for those controls to matter.
