Waymo, Zoox And Ford Drive The Next Phase Of Mobility

The future of driving is progressing quickly, and the latest updates show just how much the industry is evolving. New autonomous services are rolling out, testing programs are expanding and automakers are working through fresh safety challenges. All in all, it’s a defining moment for the entire sector.

One of the biggest moves in this wave comes from Waymo, which is expanding its driverless operations. Waymo is stepping into a bigger phase of its autonomous journey, rolling out fully driverless operations in five new cities: Miami, Dallas, Houston, San Antonio and Orlando.

Miami is the first to go live from day one, with the others following in the next few weeks before riders can start using the service next year. According to Waymo, the moment that used to seem like a huge technical leap, running fully rider-only trips, has turned into something they can now do consistently.

The company credits its fast expansion to a generalizable Driver that easily adapts to new environments, along with a playbook that guides teams through local road behavior and any needed AI updates.

Every new launch feeds into a cycle of real-world driving, simulation and frequent software updates, which Waymo says helps keep safety and service consistent everywhere. In fact, its data shows the Waymo Driver has been involved in “11 times fewer serious injury collisions compared to human drivers.”

Waymo also points out that “successfully scaling requires more than just world-class technology and operations; it requires earning the trust of those we seek to serve.”


As more cities come aboard, Waymo says its focus remains on safety, reliability and bringing its “magical ride-hail experience” to more people.

At the same time, Waymo’s rivals aren’t slowing down either.

Amazon’s Zoox is picking up the robotaxi race. The company has started offering free rides to early users in parts of San Francisco.

People on its waitlist are now being invited to try point-to-point trips in San Francisco's South of Market, the Mission District and the Design District. Zoox says this will help improve the service before expanding further.

The timing matters because the robotaxi race is getting more competitive. Tesla has launched its robotaxi service in Austin and added a driver-based ride-hailing option in the Bay Area.

Zoox stands out because of its unusual vehicle design. Its robotaxi has no steering wheel, no pedals and looks more like a compact shuttle than a car. The company has been offering free rides to the public along the Las Vegas Strip since September.

With more players entering the market and regulations still tight, Zoox’s expansion shows that the push toward commercial autonomous rides is still moving forward.

Well, even robotaxi players scale up, the rest of the industry is wrestling with safety issues of its own.

Ford is issuing another set of recalls as it continues to address safety problems across its vehicles. The company is recalling nearly 230,000 Bronco models in the U.S. because the instrument panel display can fail.

This issue may cause warning lights or the speedometer to stop showing, creating a safety risk. NHTSA says Ford will fix the problem with a free software update, either at dealerships or through an over-the-air update.

Ford is also recalling more than 20,000 hybrid vehicles due to a defect in their high-voltage battery cells. Faulty cells can lead to battery failure, prompting the company to act quickly. These recalls follow another one last month that affected almost 80,000 vehicles.

That recall was tied to lose interior panels near the front doors and rear lights that could fail. It highlights how modern cars face more issues due to complex software and components.
