UCL Scientist Set New World Record With Near 1Tbps Wireless Data Transfer Speeds

What Did The Scientists From University College London Achieve?


Scientists and researchers from the University College London’s (UCL) Electronic and Electrical Engineering announced they achieved a data transmission speed of 938 Gigabits per second (Gbps) through wireless technology.

This resulted in the group setting a new world record.

As per the news release published on UCL’s website, this speed is up to 9,380 times faster than the average 5G download speed in the UK, which is currently 100 Megabits per second.

According to the researchers, data was sent across a frequency range of 5-150 Gigahertz (GHz), more than five times higher than the previous world record.

The researchers note that current wireless transmission methods, which include Wi-Fi and 5G mobile, mostly operate at low frequencies below 6GHz and it’s congestion in this frequency range that limits the speed of wireless communications.

The innovative approach combines high-speed electronics and millimeter wave photonics for the first time.

It’s the efficient use of a broader range of frequencies that significantly increases bandwidth according to the group.

The breakthrough is expected to meet the growing demand for faster and more reliable wireless data capacity in the next three to five years.

This advancement has the potential to revolutionize connectivity across various sectors.

What Did The Researchers Say?


Dr Zhixin Liu, senior author of the study from UCL Electronic & Electrical Engineering, said, “Current wireless communication systems are struggling to keep up with the increasing demand for high-speed data access, with capacity in the last few meters between the user and the fiber optic network holding us back.”

“Our solution is to use more of the available frequencies to increase bandwidth, while maintaining high signal quality and providing flexibility in accessing different frequency resources.”

“This results in super-fast and reliable wireless networks, overcoming the speed bottleneck between user terminals and the Internet.”

“Our new approach combines two existing wireless technologies for the first time, high-speed electronics and millimeter wave photonics, to overcoming these barriers.”

“This new system allows for the transmission of large amounts of data at unprecedented speeds, which will be crucial for the future of wireless communications.”
