Get ready to unravel all the details of this epic alliance!
Top executives from seven AI firms, including Google, Microsoft and OpenAI, will meet at the White House on Friday to discuss ways to help consumers recognise AI-generated content. This move will ensure the safety of their products before they are made available to the public.
The list of possible participants includes Amazon, Anthropic, Inflection, Meta and more. The businesses will formally commit to a set of guidelines for the future of AI research and development.
Now that OpenAI's ChatGPT, which can respond to simple text inputs with sophisticated, creative, and conversational responses, is out in the wild, safety has become a top priority in the AI community. With more tech giants investing in large language models to power generative AI, safeguards need to be deployed.
Major experts have publicly raised concerns about advancing AI too hastily in light of the technology's potential risks. To paraphrase what several researchers and leaders in the field said in an open letter back in May: "mitigating the risk of extinction from AI should be a global priority alongside other societal-scale risks such as pandemics and nuclear war."
So, what are the primary commitments?
-
Developing a way for consumers to identify AI-generated content through watermarks.
-
Engaging independent experts to assess the security of their tools before releasing them to the public.
-
Sharing information on best practices and safeguards with industry players, governments and outside experts.
-
Allowing third parties to look for and report vulnerabilities in their systems.
-
Reporting limitations of their technology and guiding on appropriate uses of AI tools.
-
Prioritizing research on societal risks of AI, including around discrimination and privacy.
- Developing AI with the goal of helping mitigate societal challenges such as climate change and disease.
Where is this move headed?
Amazon Web Services CEO Adam Selipsky, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Google's head of global affairs Kent Walker, Inflection CEO Mustafa Suleyman, Meta's head of global affairs Nick Clegg, Microsoft President Brad Smith and OpenAI President Greg Brockman were among the executives invited to Friday's White House meeting.
The voluntary agreements are reported to be the result of consultations with other countries as the Biden administration is striving to ensure that they uphold international efforts to regulate the technology.
"It will take some time before Congress can pass a law to regulate AI," said Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo. It's to the President's credit that he realises we're pressed for time. Artificial intelligence is advancing at a rate never before witnessed in technological history.”
She stated that the firms "are committed to real transparency," working with third parties to evaluate the models and with the U.S. government to test the models and share information.
"Don't underestimate the power of that transparency and the fact that they know we are watching and their customers are watching, to hold them to account."
There you have it, folks!
